Price examples

Check out price examples of plastering repairs below to get an idea of the total cost.

Most commonly chosen work
Do you have a newly built home and cracks have appeared due to plastering being done too quickly? Then choose to use spackle plaster. This is a thinner layer that can withstand limited settling of walls and ceilings. For an area of 150 m2 that you have sprayed with spackling, you pay an average of £1,200.

Larger project
Do you have recurring cracks in the surface and would like to get rid of them? A plasterer uses plaster and a fibreglass tape to do this. The groove is sealed and the fibreglass is pressed against the plaster. It is then plastered smooth. On a substrate of sauce-ready plastering with an area of 20 m2, you arrive at an average price of £350.

Detailed project
A detailed project is when the cracks extend to the ceiling. It is difficult to fix this because a ceiling has difficult angles. For an area of 50 m2, you come out to an average price of £700 for plastering the ceiling.

What choices affect the price?

Check out which 4 choices will affect the total price of your plastering repair.

Choice 1: What kind of plastering do you want to have applied?
There are 3 different types of plastering, check out how they differ from each other:

Spacking:The most inexpensive plastering is spacking. It is used in new construction houses because this plastering can withstand the settlement of the walls. It is inexpensive plastering because it is sprayed on the wall using a sprayer. The price difference is determined by what colour you want the plastering applied. The basic colour of spray paint is white, but it is also possible to choose another colour. Plasterers charge a colour supplement of £2 per m2. White plastering costs on average between £5 and £9 per m2 , and in another colour between £7 and £11 per m2 . Wallpaper-ready plaster is a type of plaster in which the wall is plastered coarser so that the wall is suitable for wallpapering or decorative plaster over it. A wallpaper-ready plastered wall is not suitable for painting because the wall is too rough. As a result, the paint does not adhere well to the wall.

Ornamental plaster: Ornamental plaster is a popular form of plaster, it gives a special texture to the wall. The most commonly chosen decorative plaster is spachtelputz, a decorative plaster with a grain structure. It is possible to determine the texture yourself, such as a fine or a coarse texture. Another form of decorative plaster is rustic putz. Rustic putz also has a grain structure, but it is thicker than spachtelputz and it shows small grooves. Granol is the coarsest decorative plaster, as it has deep grooves ranging from 3 mm to 4 mm.

Choice 2: Reinforcement against cracks
Because the plastering can discolour or wear out after so much time, it is wise to add reinforcement to the walls. When this is done, mesh is applied and embedded between two layers of plastering. This way, the mesh will hold the layers together when there is stress on the plastering. Having this carried out by the plasterer will prevent cracks in the walls after some time.

Choice 3: Smooth plastering, sanding or recurring cracks in surface
To repair plastering, different methods are used. Each plastering requires a different method which is explained below.

  • Smooth plastering is repaired with red tape. The plasterer cleans the surface and treats it with a primer for plaster so that the newly applied plaster adheres well.
  • For repairing sanding, yellow tape is usually used. This is applied in the same way as smooth plastering. For recurring cracks, fibreglass tape is used. In this way, the working of walls and ceilings is taken care of so there is little chance of the plaster cracking. At the cracks, plaster is placed with the fibreglass tape, then plaster is applied over it so that nothing more can be seen.

Choice 4: Additional options
Finally, there are additional options that may apply to your plastering repair.

Service Average price, incl. VAT When?
Sanding £ 15 – £ 25 per m2 If you want a nice shadow effect on your ceiling, for example, choose sanding. The plasterer works with a sanding sponge with which he applies a sandy surface to the ceiling in rotating movements.
£ 15 – £ 30 per m2 If you have walls or ceilings that are too rough, have a layer of plaster mortar applied as a base for other forms of plasterwork. A layer of plaster is between 5 and 7 mm thick.
Starting rate £ 290 – £ 320 If the area to be plastered is very small, a starting rate is often set. A starting rate is usually charged for areas under 30 m2. The price does not include materials.
