What choices affect the price?
Check out which choices will affect the cost of having your exterior walls plastered.
Choice 1: The type of plaster
When plastering an exterior wall, there are usually 3 types of plaster to choose from: fine sanding, plastering and plaster.
Sanding
Are you opting for a finish that’s finished in one go? Then opt for sanding work. A sanding layer varies from 3 mm to 1 cm thick. Once the plasterer has applied the layer, it is sanded down with a sponge to create a nice effect and create a water-repellent plaster.
Spachtelputz
Spachtelputz can be used both indoors and outdoors. However, it is important when plastering the exterior wall, to use exterior quality. By using this type of plaster, you will enjoy the result for a long time. Spachtelputz is scratch- and impact-resistant and can easily be kept clean with a high-pressure cleaner.
Plaster
Plaster is a bonded plaster of smooth cement. Cement is material that stands up well to moisture. A plaster layer that is applied can be sealed with an exterior wall paint after it has cured.
Choice 2: Reinforcement against cracks
Despite the fact that exterior wall plastering is of better quality than interior wall plastering, there is a chance of cracks. When this happens, mesh must be applied and embedded between two layers of plastering or the pointing replaced. The mesh holds the layers together when there is stress on the plastering. A tip is to apply this reinforcement immediately when plastering. Replacing grouting costs on average £40 per m2.
Choice 3: Façade insulation
Insulating the façade not only saves on energy costs, but it also dampens noise from outside. Façade insulation is plastic sheets that are glued onto the façade. After gluing the sheets on, reinforcement mesh must be placed before the final finishing layer can be applied. Plastic sheets are available in all shapes and sizes from 1 cm to 8 cm thick. Below is a price indication of the costs for facade insulation.
Type of house | Average prices for external wall plastering |
---|---|
Appartment | £3,000 – £3,500 |
Tween house | £8,000 – £9.000 |
Corner house | £ 9,000 – £ 10,000 |
2 under 1 roof house | £ 12,000 – £ 14,000 |
Detached house | £ 18.000 – £22,000 |
Choice 4: Additional option
It is possible to hire a plasterer by the hour or by the square metre. Do you want to have a small area plastered? Then it is smart to hire the plasterer by the hour. A plasterer costs between £20 and £60 per hour, depending on the material and experience. For larger projects, it is difficult to estimate how long a plasterer will be working on the project. That is why we usually agree on an amount per square metre. A plasterer costs between £12 and £20 per m2.
Don’t forget to check with the municipality for a permit when you want to plaster the outside wall. If you want to restore the facade to its former state, you do not need to apply for a permit.
