Choices that determine ornamental fencing prices

The price of your ornamental fencing depends on several choices. Below you can see which choices they are.

Choice 1: Galvanised and coated
  • Galvanised: To prevent rusting, metal fencing is always galvanised. Because metal that is not galvanised will rust in damp weather, galvanising your fencing is very important. The fencing will last longer this way. The colour of galvanised fencing is silver-grey. Galvanised fencing costs between £30 and £90 per metre.
  • Coated: If you want a colour other than silver-grey for your fencing, have it coated. The standard colour of coated fencing is green or black. Coating involves applying powdered paint to the metal, then baking it in an oven. This way, the paint sticks very well and is maintenance-free. Coating is done at an additional cost of 10%. Prices for ornamental fencing that is galvanised and coated are between £40 and £120 per metre.

If you want a colour other than green or black, have your fencing coated in another colour of your choice for an additional 10% charge. It is more expensive to have your fence coated in another colour, as these colours often have to be ordered separately. The prices of a galvanised ornamental fence coated in a colour other than green or black is between £60 and £160 per metre.

Choice 2: What kind of gate?

When buying a fence, a gate is usually also purchased to close off the property completely. This is important if you want to keep unwanted guests out. You also have choices in the gates for your fencing.

  • Walk gate: A walk gate is a simple and small gate suitable only for pedestrians. This gate is the cheapest type of gate and costs around £130 and £300 per metre.
  • Turn gate: Do you need a gate that does allow a car to pass through? Then a swing gate is a good choice. This is a gate with 1 or 2 opening doors. As a result, this gate requires extra space at the front or back. For a swing gate with a single door, you pay between £350 and £400. For a swing gate with double doors, you pay around £450 and £900.
  • Sliding gate: If you don’t want to sacrifice extra space at the front or back, choose a sliding gate. A sliding gate is a gate at least 3 metres wide with 1 or 2 doors that slide open to the side and costs around £1,500 and £2,000.
  • Electric swing gate: Large gates are often automated because they are heavy to open and so you don’t have to get out of your car to open the door when it rains. An electric swing gate ranges between £620 and £6,300. The price differences are so great because there are 3 different motors to choose from.
  • Electric sliding gate: Another gate that is often made electric is a sliding gate. With an electric sliding gate, there is only 1 motor available, therefore prices are also less far apart than with a swing gate. The prices of an electric sliding gate are between £4,000 and £5,500. Choice 3: Have it fitted or do it yourself?

If you want to have the certainty that your fencing will be fitted properly, then it is wise to have it fitted by a specialist. The installation of your ornamental fencing must be done precisely otherwise there is a good chance that the fencing will be crooked. The installation of an ornamental fence costs between £10 and £20 per metre. For the installation of a gate, installation costs also vary in price. This depends on the type of gate you take.
