You are thinking about adding underfloor heating to your bathroom. Perhaps you are remodelling or renovating your bathroom and you like the idea of underfloor heating as an extra option. What does it cost to install underfloor heating in the bathroom and what different options do you have? Read it here.

Bathroom underfloor heating costs

By far the most popular underfloor heating is the traditional underfloor heating milling, which is why we tell you about it in particular. By keeping the pipe spacing (H.O.H. distance) relative to each other small, you create enough heat in the bathroom to omit radiators. If you opt for a larger H.O.H. distance, because you only want to use the underfloor heating as additional or comfort heating in your bathroom, then additional radiators are necessary.

The number of groups is shown above. To prevent pressure loss, a pipe should have a maximum length of 120 metres. Depending on the size of your bathroom, in most cases this will be 1 or 2 groups of pipes.

Costliest:
You have a small bathroom and only 1 group of underfloor heating is enough to heat the entire bathroom. The area of your bathroom is maximum 5 m2. In this case, it will cost around £650, including materials, installation, VAT and any milling work.

Average:
You have a medium-sized to large bathroom that you want to fit with underfloor heating. The underfloor heating serves as main heating, as no radiators are otherwise used. Fitting a bathroom up to 20 m2 with underfloor heating costs on average £ 775, including materials, installation, VAT and any milling work.

Luxury:
You have a very spacious bathroom larger than 20 m2 and would like to fit it with underfloor heating as the main heating or comfort heating. With underfloor heating as main heating in the bathroom with an area of 20 m2 to 40 m2 or with underfloor heating as additional heating with an area of 40 m2 to 80 m2 you take into account an average price of £875 to £1,155.

What choices affect the cost of bathroom underfloor heating?

Choice 1: Electric or traditional underfloor heating
Because you can install electric underfloor heating in the bathroom yourself and it is generally cheaper than traditional underfloor heating, electric underfloor heating is cheaper in the short term. This saves up to £600 on the total cost. However, the energy consumption of these electric mats is much higher than with traditional underfloor heating, so in the end it is still advisable to opt for traditional underfloor heating.

  • Traditional underfloor heating
The most common form of underfloor heating in the bathroom is traditional underfloor heating. In traditional underfloor heating, plastic pipes are incorporated into the subfloor and then connected to the cv boiler, allowing the hot water to flow through these pipes. Installing traditional underfloor heating is not an easy project. Always have the installation of bathroom underfloor heating done by a recognised specialist. That way, the chance of a leak or faulty installation is a lot less than if you were to install the underfloor heating yourself. The big advantages of traditional underfloor heating are the relatively low consumption costs and high reliability.
  • Electric underfloor heating
Electric underfloor heating is used less often in the bathroom. Electric underfloor heating uses electric mats with filaments in them. These mats are simply mounted on the subfloor. The advantage of electric underfloor heating is that it has a shorter warm-up time than traditional underfloor heating. The disadvantage, however, is the high energy consumption. Electricity is more expensive than gas, which makes electric underfloor heating less interesting than traditional underfloor heating.

Choice 2: Main heating or auxiliary heating
Have one or more radiators in your bathroom? If so, a high pipe intensity is not necessary and you choose an underfloor heating as a supplementary heating. This is reflected in the price. Twice as much material is needed for a main heating than for a supplementary heating. This makes a difference of up to £150 in the total price.

Choice 3: Additional options
When installing traditional underfloor heating in the bathroom, there are additional options that affect the price. A handy overview shows these options and the additional prices.

Additional options infreeding traditional underfloor heating Average price per additional option (including materials, assembly and VAT) Explanation
Pump switch £ 65 – £ 100 Every underfloor heating system has a pump to move the water through the pipes. These pumps are often running 24/7 while the heating is not always on. A pump switch brings energy savings by eliminating the need for the pump to run full-time.
Connecting to district heating £ 75 If the house is heated by district heating, connecting the underfloor heating is slightly more complex. The installer often charges extra for this.
Removal of radiators £ 20 – £ 30 Removal and removal of old radiators.
Mounting a bypass valve £ 45 – £ 70 A bypass valve allows the flow to the boiler to run more smoothly and prevents overloading the pump.
