Installing glass

Burdened by high energy bills, cold and/or draughts through your windows? Then it’s time to have new glass fitted. By installing double-glazing, you will reduce your energy bills while still keeping your home nice and warm. Find out how fitting glass works and what the average cost for this project is here.

What does fitting glass cost?

The labour cost of a glazier is between £40 and £60 per hour. Other costs depend on the type of glass you choose. The table below shows the average cost of glass per square metre and the average annual savings on your energy bill when you have new glass fitted. This calculation is based on HR++ glass, which is the most frequently installed type of glass in the Netherlands.

Window area in m² Average prices, incl. VAT Average savings per year
15 m² £ 1.800 – £ 2,200 £ 200
20 m² £ 2,500 – £ 2,800 £ 250

Glazier

Getting glass installed by a glazier

A glazier will make sure your glass is installed in your window frame in the safest way possible. In most cases, a glazier comes together with a colleague. This is especially the case with a large window or project. Glass is a heavy and fragile material, so a couple of extra hands would come in handy. The steps involved are:

  1. Your frames will be inspected and measured by a glazier.
  2. The glazier will advise you on the different types of glass they will install.
  3. The glass will be ordered and cut to size at the factory.
  4. As soon as the glazier is in possession of your glass, an appointment will be made with you for the fitting of the glass.
  5. Your old glass including sealant will be removed.
  6. As soon as the frame is ready, your new glass will be fitted. It depends on the type of frame whether the glass should be fitted from the inside or outside. On the outside, a glazier needs scaffolding if it is not on the ground floor.
  7. Once the glass is in the frame, the glazing slats are placed and the edges are sealed. This sealant edge is not only for fixing, but also for insulation so that it is nice and warm in your house in winter.

Tips for having glass fitted

Look at quality marks

If you want certainty about the guarantee, choose a glass dealer who is a member of the trade association OnderhoudNL. This is because then you will benefit from a 5-year guarantee scheme on correct fitting. After the 5 elapsed years, this can be extended for another 5 years. If a glazier is not a member of OnderhoudNL, always make clear agreements about the guarantee period before installation.

Let HR++ glass be installed

The most frequently chosen type of glass is HR++ glass. Why? Because of its good value for money. HR++ insulates better than standard double glazing because the cavity between the two panes of glass is filled with argon gas instead of dry air. The investment in HR++ glass pays for itself within a few years thanks to its excellent insulation value. The savings on your energy bill are on average £ 260 per year. The difference in price between standard double glazing and HR++ glass can be recovered within 2.5 years. So make good agreements with your glazier and record them. For example, think about whether the price includes call-out charges, what the delivery times are, whether the removal fee is included, VAT and energy surcharge.
