Natural look
If you are renovating your garden and want to go for a natural look, wood is the best choice. Wood is a natural material and gives your garden a natural look. On average, a wooden pergola costs between £600 and £2,200. The price depends on the type of wood and the size.
Modern look
People with a modern house usually want a modern pergola, so that the pergola matches the house. This is why they often choose aluminium. Aluminium has an industrial look and therefore goes well with modern homes. An aluminium pergola costs approximately between £1,300 and £5,000.
Economic modern look
If you want to build an inexpensive garden, but with a modern look, plastic polycarbonate is a good option. This material is cheaper than aluminium, but still has a modern look. The prices of this are on average between £800 and £2,000.

What choices determine pergola prices?
There are several choices that affect the price. Check them out below.
Choice 1: Which material?
There are three different types of materials you can choose from.
Wood: Wood is a common material. This is the easiest to customise and wood gives a natural look. Because it is a natural product, it does require more maintenance than the other two materials. You can choose from different types of wood. This also creates differences in price. Hardwood such as beech, oak or mahogany is more expensive than softwood such as impregnated pine, pine or cedar. Wooden pergolas are often overgrown with plants, which creates an even cosier look. Prices of wooden pergolas range between £600 and £2,500.
Polycarbonate: Plastic polycarbonate is fairly inexpensive compared to the other two materials. An advantage of polycarbonate is that it blocks UV rays and infrared radiation, preventing the furniture underneath from discolouring. In addition, plastic is lightweight, so you need fewer support poles and are therefore more economical. Prices for a polycarbonate pergola are between £800 and £2,000.
Aluminium: Modern pergolas often use the light but strong aluminium. Aluminium often costs the most in relation to the other two materials. A big advantage of aluminium is that it requires no maintenance. In addition, aluminium lasts a long time and is an ecologically sound product. A disadvantage of aluminium is that it is difficult to work with and therefore you cannot put many of your personal preferences into it. Prices are on average between £1,300 and £5,000.
Choice 2: Free-standing or wall-mounted?
A pergola can be free-standing or wall-mounted. A freestanding pergola, also called a ‘stand alone pergola’, has four legs and can be placed anywhere in your garden. A wall-mounted pergola has two legs and the other side is fixed to the wall. A free-standing pergola is usually slightly more expensive than a wall-mounted one.
Choice 3: Which roofing material?
Many people just leave the top open, but you can also cover a pergola with a cloth or with glass. Common types of cloth are waterproof harmonica cloths. They ensure that you and your furniture stay dry in a small rain shower and also provide more shade. Glass can be used for wall-mounted pergolas. It provides much more light and does not block shade. Although glass is more expensive than cloth, it also has a much sleeker look.
choice 4: Additional options
The choices below are not necessary, but you can apply them to make the pergola more to your liking.
Product | Average price | Why |
---|---|---|
Climbimb vegetation | £20 – £45 per 150 cm | Enhances a greener and more natural look. |
Other colour to be sprayed | £ 70 – £ 100 | Can only be done on wooden pergolas. |
