what does an electrician cost?

Goodest:

You want to hire an electrician, but prefer to spend as little money on this as possible. An uncertified electrician can supposedly complete any electricity project successfully, but this offers you no guarantee. Moreover, insurance will not cover the damage in case of any complications afterwards. Regardless of the fact that a project like a plug socket replacement costs only £15, hiring an uncertified electrician, even for small projects, is strongly discouraged.

Self-employed:

Have you ever looked for an electrician, you will know that the hourly rate of a certified electrician with a sole proprietorship is often lower than the hourly rate of electricians working for SMEs. Self-employed electricians often charge a slightly lower hourly rate, as there is less to factor in employer charges and profit mark-ups. A project such as replacing a metre box will cost you an average of £485 to £660 from a self-employed contractor.

SME electricians:

An electrician company from the SME sector usually charges the highest hourly rate of the three mentioned. This is because it takes into account employer charges and profit mark-ups. Having the electrics installed by a recognised SME electrician company for an entire house costs on average £3,700.

There are different types of projects related to electricity. Below is an overview of the most common projects along with an average total price per project. All prices include materials, installation and VAT.

Type of project Average price (incl.materials, installation and VAT) Description
Electricity installation £ 1.550 – £ 2,000 Electricity installation in a complete house.
Electricity installation £ 540 – £ 780 Electricity installation in a house.
Replace the meter box £ 485 – £ 660 Replace or install a meter box with more than 4 groups.

Connecting a wall socket £ 55 – £ 80 Connecting a wall socket in any room inside or outside the house.
Choice 2: Hourly rate or total price

The hourly rate varies per electrician. For large projects, such as electrical installation or meter box replacement, it is convenient to agree on a total price in advance. Many electricians offer this option, so you know exactly where you stand in advance. Not only for large projects, but also for small ones, it is possible to agree on a total price. If you want to install a socket, for example, it will cost on average £55 to £80 per socket.

Choice 3: The degree of difficulty

Some electricians charge a different hourly rate per project. This varies by as much as £10 on the hourly rate. Especially for tricky projects, such as installing lighting or replacing the distribution board, the electrician in some cases charges a higher hourly rate. Check with the electrician beforehand what the hourly rate is for the project in question.

Choice 4: Additional options

If you have looked for an electrician before, you will know that an electrician does more than just work with wires and cords. For example, if you want to have your electrical socket replaced or electrics laid, the electrician will have to cut into walls to get rid of wiring.
