Glazier-prices

Depending on the situation, the glazier prices are as follows:

Replacing only one or a few windows:

Is there any glass damage and do you want to replace one window, for example? For an average-sized window, you will pay around £200 or £300 for new glass.

HR++ glass in your entire flat:

Do you have a flat with outdated glazing and want to have modern insulating glass installed instead? Assuming an average of 15 m² of windows, the total price will be around £ 2,000.

HR+++ glass for an energy-neutral house:

If you live in a semi-detached or detached house and want to make it energy-neutral, you will need HR+++ glass, which is the best insulating glass. For this three-pane glass in all windows, think of a total price of £7,000 on average.

What do you pay for at glazier prices?

Glazier prices

Good glass work is not cheap, and it is therefore good to understand how that price is built up. For a square metre price of £140 for HR++ glass, the cost can be broken down into the following components:

  • £80: material costs of glasswork
  • £50: hourly wages of glazier
  • £10: additional costs (call-out costs, etc.)

This shows that less than half of the total price is determined by the hourly wages of the glazier. This is relatively little money for absolutely professional work. Sometimes glaziers don’t use an hourly rate, but a wage per m² of £50 to £70. Glaziers are trained to do their specialist work, which listens closely, to perfection. And that is important, because only by fitting and finishing the glass perfectly will the optimal insulation value of the new window be achieved. In this way, you ensure yourself an annual saving on your energy costs of easily £ 200 or more.

What choices determine the price of your glass?

There are several choices that determine the price of new glass. These have to do with the type of glass, desired delivery time and any extra options.

Choice 1: Rush or no rush?

Do you have glass damage and want new glass as soon as possible, or is there no rush? For example, when a ball has gone through the window. Many glass shops offer a quick glass service, but there is an extra charge for this. If it is a long-term improvement to your home, it is advisable to take more time for this so that you do not pay extra for it.

Choice 2: What type of glass?

The type of glass you want is important for the final price of your new windows. The thicker and more insulating glass, the higher the price per square metre. Most glaziers work with HR++ glass as standard. HR++ glass has an extra insulating coating, and the two panes of HR++ glass are separated by argon gas, which insulates better than ordinary dry air. Despite all these special features, HR++ glass is barely more expensive than less well-insulating glass types. It is precisely this attractive price-quality ratio that makes HR++ glass the most widely used type of glass in the Netherlands. Below are the m² prices per type of glass, including the hourly wages of a glazier:

Glass type Price including a glazier’s hourly wage
Standard double glazing £ 125 per m²
HR glass £ 130 per m²
HR+ glass £ 135 per m²
HR++ glass £ 140 per m²
HR++ glass £ 180 per m²
Choice 3: With or without frames?

Many people who opt for new windows have their frames replaced at the same time. This is because older window frames are often not suitable for modern insulation glass, which is thicker and heavier. Many glass shops therefore also offer options to install glass including new frames. Then you will have new insulation glass with beautiful, well-insulating new frames as well. For a 60×60 centimetre window, including frames and glazing, think of an average price from £350.

Choice 4: Possible extras/alternatives

Finally, it is important to consider whether you want to stick to replacing the glazing or make additional investments. Here are a few examples:

  • Plastic frames: £220 (window 60 x 60 centimetres)
    Do you want the best insulating and most durable solution? Then opt for insulation glass combined with strong frames, such as modern plastic frames.
  • Front windows: £ 160 per m²
    Are there windows in your house where modern HR++ glass is not possible? In a property with a listed status, for example, wider window frames are usually not allowed at the front. In that case, front windows are another alternative. These are sheets of glass in a frame, which are fitted to the inside of a window. In this way, they perform the same function as ordinary insulating glass, without the need for interventions in the frames.
  • Full insulation
    Isolation does not stop at windows alone, of course. Having your windows replaced with HR++ glazing by a glazier is a nice improvement, but if the rest of the house is not properly insulated, it still doesn’t do much good. So check what energy label your house has now, and what can be improved about the ‘insulation envelope’ of your home. Think about cavity wall insulation or insulating your floors or roof.
