Price examples
The price examples below tell you what kind of staircase renovation you can expect for a certain price.
Costliest price:
You are cheapest for a staircase renovation when you have a straight open staircase. This is because it requires less material than renovating a closed staircase or one with a turn. The £ 1,750 from the price list is based on renovating the stairs with laminate overlays. Laminate can easily be matched with the rest of your interior thanks to the various colours.
Middle way:
Most stairs have a bottom or top quarter in the design, or a turn. A staircase with bottom or top quarter has slightly more angles and surface area than a straight staircase. For this reason, stair renovation is more expensive. Having an open staircase with bottom or top quarter renovated with overlay steps costs an average of £2,250. This staircase renovation price often includes the renovation of the stair cheeks (the sides).
Highest price:
The highest price you pay is when you want to have a staircase renovation done for a closed staircase on which you have oak overlay steps installed. A oak staircase is the most durable, given the excellent quality of the material. The stair specialist will renovate your closed staircase with oak overlay steps, including risers and stair cheeks for an average of £3,200. In this case, the staircase renovation prices for an open staircase are around £2,800.

What choices determine the staircase renovation prices?
The amount of the total price is partly in your own control. Look at the following choices you will face.
Choice 1: Shape of the stairs
The shape of your stairs is often more of a given than a choice, as it is already fixed. The shape of your stairs, however, is important for the specialist to know more about beforehand. This is to give a good indication of staircase renovation prices. The more material is needed, the higher the price will be. Information that the staircase specialist wants to know, among other things:
- Do you have a straight staircase, a staircase with a bottom or top quarter or a double-quarter staircase?
- Is your staircase open or closed?
- Do you have or do you want stair stringers or not?
- How many steps are there?
- How many staircases do you want to have renovated?
Choice 2: Type of staircase renovation
The second thing to think about before having your stairs renovated is choosing between the different types of treads. Most stairs are made of wood, but are finished with different materials. Stair renovation works by means of overlay steps. HPL / CPL overlay steps are steps of a hard plastic layer topped with a top layer of, for example, wood, laminate or PVC as desired. Wood species such as oak are also often used to make transfer steps that are put over the current step in one go.
Would you rather have your steps painted or choose a soft stair covering such as carpet? That too is obviously possible, although it is no longer called stair renovation. The cost of painting a staircase ranges from £400 to £1,000, depending on how extensive the work is (from a single whitewash to sanding, cleaning and painting). Stair cladding is possible from as little as £600. The price overview below shows the various options for actual staircase renovation.
Material | Common price per transfer step, incl. VAT, excl. installation |
---|---|
Laminate | £35 |
PVC coating | £45 |
Oak | £65 |
HPL/CPL | £70 |
Choice 3: Additional options
When you have the basics of ideal staircase renovation clearly in mind, you can still choose additional options to complete your staircase.
Options | Price incl. VAT, excl. installation | Explanation |
---|---|---|
Anti-slip strips | £ 3 – £ 15 per metre | Anti-slip on stairs |
Stair mats | £ 3 – £ 15 per mat | As an accessory, against slipping on the stairs |
Lighting | £ 10 – £ 40 per spotlight or LED strip | Modern accessories for the stairs |
Price example: Suppose you opt for a staircase renovation with HPL / CPL overlay steps (£70 per overlay step). You have stair mats fitted (£35 per mat) and choose a new modern stair banister (£70 each). A specialist will handle the staircase renovation professionally for you. They will make a calculation based on the time they need for the staircase renovation. On average, this staircase renovation including accessories and assembly will cost you £2,100.
