Is there a subsidy for replacing wooden window frames?
If, when replacing your window frames, you also replace the current glass for HR++ glass or triple glass, the government makes a subsidy available. There are some conditions to avail of the subsidy. First of all, you add up the number of m² of glass and window frames. You have to replace at least 8m² of this on glass alone. Ultimately, you can receive a subsidy for a maximum of 45m² of the replacement glass and window frames. There is also a condition for the insulation value of the glass. The U-value (insulating value) of HR++ glass may be no more than 1.2 W/m2K and of triple glass no more than 0.7 W/m2K. Look for the other conditions and subsidy amounts on the website of the national government.

What are the wooden window frame prices made up of?
Costs for new window frames consist of labour, and material costs. Want to save on labour costs? Then request several window frame quotes to compare. You can influence material costs yourself by making some price-determining choices. These choices are explained in more detail below.
What choices determine the price of wooden window frames?
There are a number of choices that allow you to influence the final price.
What kind of wood?
When buying a wooden window frame, you can choose between softwood or hardwood. Softwood comes from coniferous trees and hardwood from deciduous trees. Wood types are classified into durability classes that say something about the lifespan of the wood. These can range from 1 to 5, with 1 being very durable.
softwood
Needle trees grow a lot faster, which means softwood is generally cheaper than hardwood. The durability classes of softwood are 3, 4 and 5. In general, therefore, this wood is less durable than hardwood, whose durability class is 1 or 2. On average, softwood has a lifespan of 25 years. Examples of softwood are: Spruce, Pine and Larch.
Hardwood
The price of hardwood window frames is generally £10 to £50 higher per frame than for a softwood window frame. The lifespan, on the other hand, is a lot longer, up to 75 years. Examples of hardwood are: Meranti, Merbau and Afzelia.
What type of window?
The price of the wooden window frame varies depending on the type of window. There are different types of windows and combinations to choose from. The two most common types of windows are explained below. Check out the features and prices of these windows below.
Fixed window
A fixed window you cannot open. As a result, this is the cheapest option. Fixed windows are also easy to install.
Turn/turn window
A turn/turn window can be tilted inwards and opened in one direction. You can also combine this window with a fixed window, so you can open part of the window. Tilt/turn windows are more expensive than fixed windows, because they have a trickier construction.
Project | Average price (incl. installation and HR ++ glass) |
---|---|
Fixed window (150 x 100 cm) | £ 1.250 – £ 1,800 |
Tilt/turn window (150 x 100 cm) | £ 1,500 – £ 2,050 |
What type of glass?
There are different types of glass to choose from for in a wooden frame. Of the types of glass, HR++ insulating glass is the most commonly chosen type, as it insulates better than single glazing and standard double glazing. For average prices, see the chart below.
Type of glass | Isolation | Average prices |
---|---|---|
Standard double glazing | Moderate | £65 – £80 per sq m |
HR++ glass | Excellent | £100 – £130 per sq m |
