The cost of an air conditioner depends on several factors: the type of air conditioner, its operation and installation. Types of operation

You can operate air conditioners in two ways. Many air conditioners have a wireless remote control that allows you to turn the air conditioner on and off. However, there are also air conditioners on the market that are controlled by a mobile app. Handy if, for example, you want to pre-cool the room(s) on the way home, so that you can step straight into the coolness when you get home. If you plan to buy an airco with a mobile app, you will generally be a bit more expensive. On average, these air conditioners cost an extra £100 to £200.

Airco with or without installation

While the mobile air conditioner can be driven straight into a room, most air conditioners need to be installed in your home. These mounting costs are in addition to the price of the air conditioner itself. See the overview below for the average installation costs per air conditioner. Or check out bol.com’s range of mobile air conditioners.

Type of air conditioner Average installation costs, incl. VAT
Split air conditioner £ 400
Multi split air conditioner £ 650
Airco without outdoor unit £ 500

Buying air-conditioning

Buying and having air-conditioning installed

1. Look at the environment

Is the room well insulated? Then an air conditioner with less cooling power will suffice. Are there many devices in the room that give off heat, such as computers? Or is the room located directly under the roof, for example? Then you need an air conditioner with a higher capacity to provide the room with a pleasantly cool temperature.

2. Choose the right cooling power

The power of an air conditioner also depends on the number of m3 you want to be cooled. See the chart below for the capacity and the corresponding area.

Power Cooling area in m³
2.5 kW Spaces up to 70 m³
3.5 kW Spaces up to 120 m³
5.0 kW Spaces up to 170 m³
7.0 kW Spaces up to 240 m³
3. Buy the right type of air conditioner

There are different types of air conditioners on the market. In the table below, we have listed them along with a description of the air conditioners. The VRF system is mainly used in commercial premises. Choose the air conditioner that best suits your needs.

Airco without outdoor unit Only an indoor unit that cannot be moved.
Mobile air conditioner Airco is not tied to a fixed location.
VRF system Complete air conditioning system that cools and heats.

Handy tips for buying an air conditioner

Tip 1. Choose energy-conscious

When buying an air conditioner, pay attention to the energy label. The most energy-conscious air conditioners carry the A to A++ label. These air conditioners are the best choice for the environment and savings on energy costs. The energy label is named in the product’s specifications.

Tip 2. Ask your neighbours

Many air conditioning specialists do volume discounts. For example, ask your neighbours who else needs an air conditioner. By buying several air conditioners at once, you will receive volume discounts. Benefit for you and benefit for your neighbours. A win-win situation therefore.
