What does an interior stylist do?

An interior stylist, also known as an interior consultant, gives advice on the design of rooms. An interior stylist is also sometimes confused with interior architect, but these are two different professions. Unlike an interior stylist, for which you don’t have to do any specific training, you can only obtain the title of interior designer by completing a specific education. For architectural projects, it is therefore best to hire an interior designer, as they are trained in this. For other projects that deal only with interiors, an interior stylist will suffice.

The interior stylist first finds out the client’s wants and needs and translates them into an appropriate design for the client’s space, style and budget. In some cases, the interior stylist also carries out the design by buying all the items and furnishing the space.

What is the working method of an interior stylist?

How extensive the working method of the interior stylist is, it depends on the type of advice. Interior stylists can also have different working methods, but in general, most comprehensive consultations involve the following steps:

    1. An introductory meeting; this meeting is often non-binding and aims to find out the client’s wishes and needs. On this basis, an offer is then drawn up and a plan of action created.
    2. Moodboard; the interior stylist will work with your wishes and needs and translate your style into a mood board. This board will visualise the new interior according to the preferences you have already expressed.
    3. Layout in 2D or 3D; different layouts of the room will be visualised in 2D or 3D. This will give you a realistic idea of what the room could look like. This describes the necessary light sources needed to properly illuminate the room and which decorative lamps fit best in the interior.
    4. Colours and materials; the interior stylist makes a choice of certain materials, colours and window decorations and incorporates this into the interior plan. All choices will be carefully coordinated to create a beautiful design.
    5. Article list; a list will be made of all the items included in the interior plan and where to buy them. This allows you to buy them easily and quickly.
    6. Presentation interior plan; when the interior plan is complete, the interior stylist will present it. The plan will be reviewed with you and you will have the opportunity to give feedback and have adjustments made.
    7. Execute interior plan; finally, you will have the choice of executing the plan yourself or outsourcing it to the interior stylist. In the latter option, the interior stylist buys all the items and then decorates the room with them.

What choices determine the cost of an interior stylist?

The amount of the interior stylist costs are determined by the following choices:

Choice 1: One or several rooms

The cost of the project depends largely on the rooms you are having styled. Do you want interior advice on the design of your living room or bedroom, or to have the whole house restyled straight away? The size of the different rooms also counts in the cost of an interior stylist. Prices for advice on an additional room are around £80 per hour.

Choice 2: The difference between an interior advice, design or execution

The work that your interior stylist does for you can be divided into advice, design and execution. The difference is in the work the stylist will actually carry out versus the work you will do yourself after the interior design advice.

  • An interior design advice is the advice that your interior stylist gives verbally or in writing after looking at the room(s) and discussing your wishes, this often takes 1 to 2 hours.
  • As part of an interior design, your interior stylist will obviously spend longer. He or she takes stock of the furniture and, in addition to the colour advice, makes a new floor plan with layout for you. You will also be given an item list with which to purchase all the products yourself.
  • The interior design consultation is the most luxurious option you can choose. You let the interior stylist completely do his/her thing with your home after discussing your wishes and making arrangements. The layout and colours are adjusted and the purchase of any new furniture is done for you. The interior stylist will often have a day’s work for this, counting on 8 to 10 hours.

Choice 3: Extras

Many interior stylists offer additional services such as personal shopping, creating a mood board or online advice. The table below shows the average prices of these different extras.

Extra option Per hour or space Average price, incl. vat Explanation
Additional advice Per hour £80 Advice for an additional space or advice for long-term change.
