What components affect the cost of asbestos removal?

The level of asbestos removal costs depends on several factors. Price influences include the inventory, the asbestos-containing material and the disposal of the asbestos-containing waste. Read more about the different situations below.

1: Asbestos inventory

Before you are allowed to have asbestos removed, an asbestos inventory must first be carried out. This is done by an asbestos inspector. You have two types of inspection:

  • Inventory of visible material
  • Full inventory

In both cases, the asbestos inventor starts with a desk study. This uses history and documents such as construction drawings and building applications to see where asbestos might be.

During the inspection, only visible materials are examined for the inventory. In a full inventory, the DIA (expert asbestos inventor) also breaks away items to see if there might be asbestos behind them.

Consult with the asbestos inventory company about which rooms you want to have inventoried and what your ultimate goal is. This will allow the inventory company to determine which inspection best suits your situation. After the inventory and the examination of the samples in a laboratory, you will receive an asbestos inventory report. You will need this for asbestos removal.

See below which inventory applies to your situation.

Type of asbestos inventory Average cost
Inventory visible material
(former type A)
£ 300 – £500
Full inventory
(former type B)
From £450

2: Where is the asbestos present?

The asbestos removal cost depends on where the asbestos is present. Is the asbestos incorporated in the walls or floors of your house, or is the roof of your shed made up of corrugated asbestos sheets? Removing asbestos in walls or floors is more expensive than removing corrugated sheets containing asbestos because it is more difficult.

3: Deposit asbestos-containing material

When the asbestos-containing material has been removed, it needs to be disposed of. You can leave this to an asbestos removal company. In specific cases, you may take asbestos away to your local council’s landfill yourself. This is subject to strict requirements. For instance, you must report it in advance, you may not break the material to make it easier to transport and it must be packed airtight.

The price for dumping asbestos varies per municipality. Some municipalities allow you to bring your asbestos-containing waste for free, others charge £0 to £25 per 100 kilograms.

Frequently asked questions

What does asbestos removal cost?

The cost of asbestos removal depends on the type of asbestos-containing material and its size, among other things. Prices start at £600, excluding the asbestos inventory that precedes it.

Is it compulsory to remove asbestos?

Asbestos removal is only compulsory if it poses a direct risk to health. An asbestos inventor will investigate during an asbestos inventory whether asbestos is present in your building and whether it needs to be removed, or an asbestos management plan can be drawn up.
