Marquise

A marquise has an authentic look. Awnings turn away from the window and create a round dome over the window. It thus protects your interior from the bright sun. The advantage of an awning is that its sides also block the sun.

The disadvantage is that on the ground floor, it is difficult to walk under it. This is because when the awning unfolds, the awning falls down. Awnings are relatively expensive to buy and maintain. An awning, on the other hand, catches a lot of dirt. Make sure you clean the top regularly. This way, you can enjoy your beautiful awning for years to come.

Screens

A screen is a fabric that sinks down tightly in front of your window via a track. It is similar to a roller shutter. The advantage of screens is that it is possible to look out from the inside, but you cannot see the house from the outside. This increases the sense of privacy.

A disadvantage of screens is that stains, such as bird droppings, are difficult to remove. In addition, the privacy benefit disappears when the sun is out. With the lights on, though, people may be able to see in from outside. Screens are one of the cheapest forms of sun protection and are easy to maintain. You can easily keep the screen clean with a soft brush and soap.

Drop-down screens

A drop-down screen is suitable for windows where there is no walk-through. The drop screen hangs diagonally low in front of the window. The fabric prevents the bright sun from shining in easily. The advantage of a drop-down screen is that even low-level sun does not shine inside.

A disadvantage of drop-down screens is that they are unsuitable for opening windows and doors. Drop awnings are relatively inexpensive because of their simple construction. The simple construction also makes maintenance easy. Ensure the hinge points are lubricated and the fabric is stain-free, so you can enjoy it all summer.

Optional awnings

An articulated awning, or sunshade, creates shade by rolling out a fabric horizontally. The screen provides a large area of shade on your patio. Articulated arms have the advantage of allowing free passage: the perfect sun protection for your terrace.

A disadvantage is that articulated arms are wind sensitive. So roll them up when the wind increases. In addition, a low-lying sun easily shines under the screen. An articulated arm is an expensive form of sun protection. However, you don’t have to worry much about an articulated arm. You clean the fabric with a soft brush and soap. Be sure to unroll the fabric if it has been open during a shower. This way, the fabric dries easily.

Roll shutters

Roll shutters darken your home via horizontal slats that roll downwards. Via a track, the slats roll tightly in front of the window. This makes it ideal shading for a skylight, for example. The advantage of a roller shutter is that it completely darkens the room. In addition, a roller shutter blocks noise, cold and heat from outside. Roller shutters also make it less easy for uninvited guests to break in.

A disadvantage is that opening and closing are not noiseless. Moreover, the appearance of roller shutters is not always attractive. Roller shutters are relatively cheap and low-maintenance. The outside of a roller shutter is also easy to clean.

Outdoor blinds

Outdoor blinds are horizontal slats that drop down in front of the window. The advantage of exterior blinds is that they allow you to control the amount of light entering the room. This makes it possible to create an almost completely darkened room.

The disadvantage of exterior blinds is that they are not burglar-proof. In addition, outdoor blinds do not withstand strong winds well. Outdoor blinds are in the mid-range in terms of price. The blinds require little maintenance and can be cleaned using a sponge, detergent and a garden hose.

Terrace covers

A terrace cover is a permanent structure. The canopy protects you not only from bright sunlight but also from rain. A terrace canopy is a four-legged frame with two legs attached to the facade and two legs on the ground. It is also possible to install glass walls, which allow you to sit even more sheltered.

The advantage of patio covers is that you can enjoy the outdoors earlier in the year. Even long into the summer, you can sit outside in the shade. The disadvantage of a patio cover is its assembly. You should leave this to a specialist because of the difficulty. The structure must be anchored in the ground.

A patio canopy is an expensive form of sun protection that needs regular polishing. After all, the canopy is outside in all seasons.

Shutters

Shutters are real eye-catchers for your interior. You determine how much light enters the room by opening or closing horizontal slats. Shutters have the advantage of working like insulation.

The disadvantage of shutters is that they always hang (partly) in front of the window. Shutters are the most expensive type of interior blinds. On the other hand, you have little to worry about. A simple wet cloth is enough to wipe the shutters clean.

Jalousies

Jalousies are one of the most popular types of blinds. Blinds consist of horizontal slats that you slide up or down yourself. This allows you to easily control the amount of light entering your home. Venetian blinds have the advantage that they are not visible when the slats are fully raised.

A disadvantage of blinds is their poor insulation value: they block heat badly. Venetian blinds are very affordable but difficult to maintain: they collect dust.

Louvres

Louvres are long strips that hang vertically in front of the window. By turning the slats, it is easy to regulate the incidence of light. The advantage of slats is their minimalist appearance. Thus slats fit well in modern rooms and bedrooms.

A disadvantage of slats is noise. When the wind is on the slats, they beat against each other. This creates a ticking sound that is not always perceived as pleasant. Slats are the cheapest form of indoor sun protection. In addition, they are maintenance-free. Dust has no grip on the vertical blinds.

Roll blinds

Roll blinds block the sun via a rolled-up fabric in front of the window. They work blackout, making them suitable for your bedroom. Would you rather hang roller blinds in your living room? Then choose the translucent variety. These curtains prevent prying eyes from outside but let in enough sunlight to enjoy a bright room.

The disadvantage of roller blinds is that it is difficult to regulate light. Roller blinds are inexpensive to buy and maintenance-free. You can go over them with a dry cloth to easily remove dust.

Folding blinds

Folding blinds are wide strips of fabric that hang below one another. The strips drop down as the curtain closes. They are separated by a round batten. The advantage of roman blinds is the possibility of washing the curtain in the washing machine. The disadvantage of Roman blinds is the minimal blackout effect. They are relatively expensive but require little maintenance.

Plisségordijnen

Plisségordijnen consists of tightly folded, pleated fabric. You can choose a transparent, semi-transparent or blackout version. The advantage of pleated blinds is that the curtains can be detached from the frame at the bottom and top. Pleated blinds are relatively cheap.

Keep in mind, though, that maintenance is tricky. Is there a stain on the curtain? Fill the bathtub with soap and water. Let the curtain soak for at least 2 hours, and make sure the curtain dries without affecting the folds.

What control do you choose for your blinds?

There are different control options for blinds. Most blinds can be operated manually or electrically: you can make them as luxurious as you like. Check the table for the different control options, the average cost and the corresponding pros and cons.

Operation Price Advantages Disadvantages
Manual operation – Cord
– Strap
– Turn bar
Free – Doesn’t cost you anything extra – Little comfort
Electric control – Wall switch
– Key switch
– Time clock
– Remote control
– App on phone/tablet
£100 – £300 – Comfortable
– Activates at adjustable times
– Controllable from anywhere from home
– High purchase cost

Manual control

Blinds are supplied with manual control as standard. Manual operation is obviously the cheapest solution: you operate your blinds using a cord, strap or turning rod.

Electric operation

Do you want more luxury and comfort? Then opt for electric operation. There are many variants of electric control: from the wall or key switches to apps and remote controls.

Electric control without transmitter

With a wall switch, you can easily activate the motor of your blinds. A simple rotary knob allows you to open or close the blinds. A key is needed to give the open and close commands with a key switch. This gives an extra degree of security. Use a timer to activate the blinds at set times. This also ensures that the temperature in the house is properly regulated.

Electric control with transmitter

Want to control your blinds from anywhere in and around the house? Then choose a remote control operation. That way, you don’t have to leave your (garden) chair. Using an app on your smartphone as a remote control is also possible.

Measurement is knowledge

Blinds are made-to-measure: after all, they need to be able to cover your windows or terrace exactly. Measuring awnings can be complicated. Want to make sure you use the right measurements? Many sun protection specialists have a measuring service. For a fee, they will come to your place and measure everything for you: that way, you can be sure it’s right.

Compare awning specialists

Nobody wants to pay too much. It is, therefore, always advisable to compare several sun protection quotes from different sun protection specialists on points such as costs, guarantees, quality marks and delivery time. This way, you can be sure to choose the specialist with the best price-quality ratio and someone who meets all your requirements.
