Veranda awnings

What function do veranda awnings have?

Awnings do more than just block out the sun. Depending on the type of blinds you choose, it can also darken your veranda properly. Awnings prevent fading of furniture due to direct sunlight, keeping your furniture looking nice for longer. It gives you more privacy by reducing or even completely blocking views. Blinds also keep your veranda cooler and protect you from harmful radiation from the sun. Finally, it can serve as decoration.

Which type of blinds you choose will largely depend on the main function it needs to fulfil. If you want blackout, you will have to go for darker screen fabrics made specifically for this purpose. This is because with standard screens, mainly the light variants, blackout is limited.

Exterior blinds or interior blinds?

Ablinds can be placed over the canopy, but they can also be placed under it. Check out the features of indoor and outdoor awnings below.

Outdoor blinds

Outdoor blinds are placed over the canopy. It is perfect for maximum sun blocking and you don’t lose space in your veranda. Outdoor awnings are actually always screens. They are usually placed on the roof, but they can also be mounted vertically to cover the sides of your veranda. This helps well against prying eyes. Screens are almost always extended using guides.

Interior blinds

If you go for interior blinds, you have plenty of choice. You can go for roman blinds, slats, blinds, curtains etc. Depending on the type of indoor blinds you choose, it can be cheaper than outdoor blinds. Indoor blinds do not need to be cleaned as often because they are protected from outside dirt. Indoor blinds do take up a bit more space on your veranda. Because sunlight enters your veranda before it is blocked, it also blocks less heat than outdoor blinds.

What types of screens for veranda blinds are there?

Are you going for screens? Then you have a choice of cloths made of different materials. Popular are glass fibre cloths and polyester cloths.

Glass fibre fabrics are especially suitable for use as vertical screens. The fabric, which is made of PVC-coated glass fibre threads, is quite heavy and would therefore sag quickly when used as a horizontal screen.

Polyester fabrics are lighter than glass fibre fabrics. They are dimensionally stable and suitable for both vertical and horizontal applications.

What colour veranda blinds do you choose?

Screens for outdoor blinds are available in all RAL colours. So you can always choose a colour that perfectly matches your facade and window frames. Go for a basic colour or go for a cheerful, summery colour. Keep in mind that the blackout and cooling effect of a screen depend mainly on its colour. The darker the screen, the more it absorbs radiation. The lighter the screen, the more radiation it reflects. Darker screens will keep your veranda just a little cooler than lighter variants. They also offer more blackout.

Frequently asked questions

How are veranda blinds operated?

Vanal blinds can be operated in different ways. Manual operation is the cheapest in terms of purchase and installation. However, it offers less convenience than electric operation. If you choose electric operation, you can choose between a switch, operation via a smartphone or operation with a remote control. There are even fully automatic electric screens available that can roll themselves up and down using sun and wind sensors.

How do you clean your blinds?

Interior blinds are generally easy to clean. Blinds can be dusted or cleaned with a damp cloth. Curtains can usually be washed. Outdoor blinds will need to be cleaned more regularly as they are exposed to the elements and dirt from outside. Lukewarm water and a soft brush will get your screens clean again. If necessary, use a cleaner that is ph-neutral, but stay away from harsh agents or abrasives.

May you roll up a screen wet?

Screens can be rolled up wet. So if it rains and you roll up your screens while they are already wet, this is not a problem. However, it is best to unroll them again after the rain to allow them to dry completely. This will prevent mould from forming on the cloth.
