Basic bathroom

You want to renovate the bathroom, but preferably spend as little money on this as possible. A basic bathroom usually consists of a shower cubicle, a washbasin with bathroom cabinet and possibly a standard bath and toilet. Of course, depending on what you want to renovate, you should take into account a total amount of £3,500 – £5,500 on average for an average bathroom of 9 m².

Average bathroom

You value the style and quality of your new bathroom. However, you don’t go for an expensive design or luxury bathroom furniture, but stay within a reasonable budget. You would like to have a toilet, walk-in shower, one or even two sinks with matching bathroom furniture and possibly a bathtub installed. In this outlined situation, you should consider total costs averaging £5,000 – £8,000 for an average bathroom of 9 m². This amount includes installation, materials and VAT.

Luxury bathroom

You attach great importance to design and style and you want only the best quality in your renovated bathroom. In this case, depending on your type of style and preference, the bathroom renovation costs run to £10,000 or more. In this type of bathroom, you will find a double sink, one or more bathroom furniture, extensive walk-in shower or luxury shower cabin and a luxury reclining or spa bath. The minimum price of £10,000 for renovating a bathroom of an average of 9 m² includes assembly, materials and VAT.

How is this bathroom renovation price built up?

bathroom remodelling

The bathroom renovation cost is made up of several components. The total price can be divided into the following elements: labour costs, material costs and disposal costs. When renovating the bathroom, the cost of disposing of the old bathroom furniture or debris from the demolition work is usually listed separately on the invoice.

What determines the bathroom renovation price?

Choice 1: Choice of style and material

The choice of style and material will have a big impact on the total price of your bathroom renovation. As an example, you have the choice of ceramic or natural stone tiles for the floor. Natural stone tiles are pricier to buy, but look more luxurious than ceramic tiles. Per m² of natural stone, you pay on average £30 – £60, while for ceramic tiles it is on average £15 – £45, including labour costs. So your own preference and taste will influence the total price of renovating your bathroom.

Choice 2: Size and room design

The size of your bathroom is not always up to you. The bigger your bathroom is, the more money it will cost you to renovate it. When renovating a bathroom, you should consider an average of £750 per m2 bathroom. You do have control over its layout, though. The more bathroom furniture and sanitary ware you put in the bathroom, the higher the price will be. Get a specific bathroom quote so that you have a good understanding of the prices of all the components you would like in your bathroom. For example, sloping walls also mean that customisation is needed to renovate the bathroom, resulting in higher costs.

Choice 3: Additional options

With a bathroom renovation, you have a number of additional options. These extra options and their prices are shown in the overview below.

Extra option Average price (incl. materials, assembly and VAT) Explanation
Floor heating £755 Up to 10 m2 as main heating (without radiators).
Whirlpool or spa bath £2,700 – £6,700 A spa bath with, for example, bubbles instead of a standard bathtub.
Steam/spa shower cabin £ 1,600 – £ 4,300 Steam cabin with massage jets, LED lighting and radio.
