Types of central heating boilers

There are several points to compare central heating boilers. First of all, you should know that you can choose between a combi and solo boilers. A combi boiler can heat your home via radiators and supply hot water at the same time. A solo boiler can only heat the house. So a solo– boiler does not provide hot water from the tap. However, in combination with a boiler, it is possible to get hot water via the solo– boiler.

When the choice is made between a combi or solo boiler, you have to choose between a vr, hr or HRe– boiler. Vr boilers stand for improved efficiency boilers. These boilers convert 83% to 90% of the energy into heat. So energy is still lost. Want higher efficiency? Then choose an hr boiler. High-efficiency boilers convert more than 100% of the energy into heat. There are even hr boilers with an efficiency of 107%. An efficiency of more than 100% is possible due to the water vapour being converted into heat.

Want to save even more on your overall energy costs? Then opt for an hr-e boiler. These boilers allow you to save up to 25% on your total energy costs. An hr-e boiler has an extra small hot air motor that generates electricity. You can use this electricity again for the rest of the household. Keep in mind the high purchase cost, though. In the table below, you will find the average boiler prices.

Type Average prices, incl. VAT Efficiency
Vr-boiler £ 900 – £ 1,500 83% – 90%
Hr-boiler £ 1,000 – £ 2.600 +100%
HR-e boiler £ 10,000 +100%
Installation costs per project £ 500 – £ 900

Which central heating boiler do you need?

It is difficult to determine which type and cw-class you need. A specialist can calculate this for you. The specialist will look at 4 main points.

  1. The type of house
  2. The year of construction of the house
  3. The number of cubic metres in the house
  4. The desired water consumption
Type of house

The type of house will influence your choice of condensing boiler. Intermediate houses are better insulated than detached houses. A detached house then logically needs a larger boiler to fill the rooms with heat. Whereas most intermediate houses will suffice with a CW-class 4 boiler, a detached house will need a CW-class 6 boiler.

Year of construction of the house

Homes are getting better and better insulated. Older houses do not have insulated glass and insulated roofs and walls. These houses will need a boiler with a higher cw rating. This way, you will also be nice and warm in winter.

Cubic metres in the house

The number of cubic metres of your house has a lot of influence on your choice of boiler. Larger houses cost more energy to heat. After all, small living rooms heat up in no time. When calculating, include only the rooms you want to heat. After all, an unused attic needs no heating.

Desired hot water consumption

The choice of your boiler depends largely on your hot water consumption. When determining your hot water usage, consider the number of users, the presence of showers/baths and the number of bathrooms.

Calculating the output of your new boiler is very tricky. Always ask a specialist in the region for a proper calculation.

Coiler tips

  • Modulating thermostat – Replace your old thermostat with a modulating thermostat. Unlike old thermostats, a modulating thermostat learns how fast your home is heating up. Old thermostats only turn off when the set temperature is reached. The heating then continues heat for some time. As a result, the final temperature is many degrees higher than the set setting. Modulating thermostats know when it is the right time to stop heating.
  • Installation – Always compare the purchase cost of central heating boilers, including installation costs. The purchase– and installation costs can vary between central heating specialists.
  • Noise – Will your new central heating boiler be installed near the bedroom? If so, choose a quiet central heating boiler. Although most central heating boilers make little noise, you may still hear the boiler kicking on.
  • Coiler specialists – Get several central heating boiler quotes from central heating specialists. Besides price, compare the removal costs of the old boiler, call-out charges, quality marks, delivery time and guarantees.
