Dormer replacement

Why do you replace your dormer?

There are numerous reasons why you may want to replace your dormer. These reasons could be, for example:

  • Your dormer is at the end of its lifespan and therefore in need of replacement.
  • There is a leak that is difficult to repair.
  • The window frames suffer from wood rot.
  • Other type of damage to the dormer causes you to have to replace your dormer.
  • You want a different type of dormer. For example, with a sloping roof instead of a flat one, or made of a more durable material.

Replace or repair?

If it is clear that your current dormer has defects, then something needs to be done. Do you replace the entire dormer or just renovate the part of the damage?

A dormer specialist can work with you to assess the damage. Sometimes a small repair is enough to be able to continue with the current dormer for years to come. In other cases, however, a dormer renovation is not worth it and it is better to replace the dormer altogether.

What are the advantages of replacing a dormer?

Replacing a dormer will give you several advantages.

  • Is your dormer more energy-efficient because it meets the latest insulation requirements;
  • You increase the value of your house;
  • Meets the latest architectural requirements;
  • You can choose other window frames, up-to-date hinges and locks and better insulating glass;
  • Also the appearance meets your current wishes again. Think of the type of material, the model, other colours or a sloping or flat roof.

How does replacing a dormer work?

Replacing the dormer with a new prefabricated dormer is done within one day. Building a traditional dormer takes a few days longer because the dormer is only assembled on site. On the execution date, the specialist will proceed as follows to install your replacement dormer:

  1. Preparations. The new dormer is ready and any permit has been arranged. On the day itself, the necessary preparations are first made. Think about creating enough space to get to work and protecting the walls and floors in the rooms themselves.
  2. Dormer dormer removal. Then it is time to deinstall the current dormer and hoist it off the roof. The old dormer can be directly disposed of and recycled, depending on the arrangements you made with the specialist.
  3. Check the roof. Before the new dormer is installed, the specialist first checks the resulting hole. If no hidden damage or possible problems are found, the installation of the new dormer can begin.
  4. Placing new dormer. Then it is time for the new dormer to be installed. In the case of a prefabricated dormer window, it is lifted onto the roof with a crane. Have you opted for a traditional installation? Then the specialist will get to work assembling the dormer on the roof.
  5. Finishing. If the new dormer is in place, it also needs to be finished on the inside. This is done by the trade specialist if it is part of their work. If you have bought a hull dormer, this is up to you.

Enhance your new dormer window with extras

Fully complete your new dormer window by adding comfort-enhancing extras. Consider, for example, a mosquito net to keep mosquitoes out during summer evenings. Shutters and blinds also contribute to extra living comfort and pleasure. If you let the specialists take care of this immediately, you will not have to worry about it after the renovation day.
