In what ways can you renovate your facade?
There are several ways to renovate your facade. Which type of facade renovation you need depends on the state of your facade.
Check out the different possibilities below:
- Replace bricks
- New cladding
- Replace grouting
- Clean your facade
- Impregnate
When your facade is damaged by cracks or fissures, for example, there are two things you can do. If the damage is not too bad you can have only the broken bricks replaced, but if the damage is so extensive that this is not feasible, it is better to opt for completely new cladding.
Replace bricks
In some cases, it is enough to replace only the damaged bricks. The specialist will then ensure that the old bricks are removed by cutting them out of the wall. Then the joints around them are also removed and the stones around the hole are well moistened. The new bricks are placed in a bucket of water so that they absorb enough moisture. Finally, the new bricks are placed and this part of the wall repointed.
The facade renovation cost of this project depends on the number and type of bricks you have replaced. On average, you will spend between £10 and £15 per brick you have renewed.
New cladding
Sometimes the damage is so extensive that it is better to have the entire facade re-clad. This involves applying a new layer over the current facade. Cladding can be done with many different materials. The most common cladding materials are:
Crepi
Crepi is an affordable material that goes well together as a finishing coat after insulating your facade. It also provides an even finish to the facade and protects against moisture. You can choose from a wide range of colours, allowing you to determine the look of your home.
Strips
Strips are strips of brick or plastic that are glued to the façade. They have the look of real bricks, but are also the priciest.
Wood
Wood is a natural material with a warm appearance. Wood also provides extra insulation. With wooden cladding, wooden slats are placed vertically or horizontally against the façade. You can choose from several suitable types of wood in different colours.
Plastic
Plastic cladding has a good price-quality ratio. It is also low-maintenance and has a long lifespan. Plastic is also available in material imitations so that it looks like wood or metal, for example.
Look below for an overview of the prices per type of facade cladding.
Type of facade cladding | Average prices per m² (incl. labour and VAT. £ 150 |
---|---|
Plastic | £ 75 – £ 125 |
Gable cladding not only gives your home a new look, but it also offers the opportunity to insulate your home. Normally this can be quite a job, but when the facade is being re-clad anyway, it is the ideal time to insulate your home. In addition, you can apply a much thicker layer with external wall insulation than with cavity wall insulation, for example, which also makes it a more effective way of insulating.
In some cases, new cladding requires you to apply for planning permission. This depends on the following factors, among others:
- Does the facade adjoin a publicly accessible area such as the road, water or public green space?
- Does changing the façade affect structures in the immediate vicinity?
If you answer yes to at least one of these questions, you will most likely need to apply for an environmental permit. This is because the facade renovation will then affect the appearance of the entire street. For the exact conditions, check the central government’s website.
Replace joints
Your joints may need to be replacedbecause they are damaged or outdated. When replacing them, you have a choice of different types of grout. The most common are:

Grade cleaning
Do you want to get rid of your dirty facade? There are different methods for cleaning your facade. Which cleaning method is most suitable for your facade depends on the degree of soiling, the substrate and the grouting. We recommend you get advice on this from a facade specialist.
Check the overview below for an indication of the prices per method.
Type of façade cleaning | Cost per m2, incl. labour and VAT | Operation |
---|---|---|
Sandblasting | £10 – £17 | The coarse abrasive is sprayed against the façade with a high-pressure cleaner, causing the dirt to fly off the façade. |
Moist blasting | £ 12 – £ 22 | The abrasive is mixed with water and sprayed onto the façade using a high-pressure cleaner. The dirt is sprayed off, as it were. |
Fog blasting | £ 15 – £ 20 | The fine abrasive is sprayed dry or wet against the façade at low pressure. Whereby the dirt is removed. The pressure can be adjusted manually. |
Steam cleaning | £ 5 – £ 15 | The water is heated to 150 degrees Celsius and, as it were, dissolves the soiling on the facade. |
Chemical cleaning | £ 15 – £ 20 | Chemical agent is applied to the facade by means of a brush or handheld sprayer. After it has taken effect, the facade is cleaned with a high-pressure cleaner. |
Impregnating
After you have had your facade cleaned, it is advisable to have your facade impregnated. The facade cleaner will spray a protective layer on your facade that repels water, fire and mould. This prevents, for example, water from penetrating your façade and causing cracks. On average, you will pay £6 per m² for impregnating your facade, including VAT.
