How are grouts removed?

When joints need to be removed it is usually due to the following reasons:

  • The joints have crumbled.
  • The joints are rotten.
  • The joints are too dirty for cleaning.
  • The entire facade needs to be renovated.

The specialist uses a number of methods to remove worn-out joints. Broadly speaking, there are two:

Cutting out

Cutting out the joints is done with an electric chipping hammer or with the classic chisel and hammer. First, all horizontal joints are removed and then the vertical joints. The downside to this method of grout removal is that it is not very fast and stones can be accidentally damaged if not worked with enough precision. Therefore, get this project done by a professional.

Reduction grinding

If the choice is made to grind out the joints, the grinder is used, often with a suction hose attached to it to extract the debris. Again, this method involves removing the horizontal joints first and only then the vertical joints. Grinding is fast, as it is quite possible to follow the joint neatly straight with the grinder. This is in contrast to the electric chipping hammer. The downside, however, is that it requires extremely precise work and a steady hand to avoid hitting stones.

How are joints replaced?

After removing the old grouting, you choose to have the new grouting installed. It is also advisable to have this done by a recognised facade specialist. You have a choice of different types of grouting. There is a distinction between relatively expensive grouting and relatively cheap grouting.

Do you have a substantial budget for joint replacement and would you prefer the facade to look as smooth as possible? Then you can opt for a luxury type of grouting such as cutting or cutting joints. These grouts cost around £50 to £100 per m², including labour costs.

The most common cheaper grouts are: flat grouting, vthickness grouting and shade grouting. On average, you will pay £10 to £12 per m² for these joints.

The benefits of joint replacement

The joints in every facade have a certain shelf life, on average 25 to 35 years. Weather, wind and other external influences wear down grouting, after which it should be replaced. Don’t you do this? Then chances are that water from outside will enter the house. Mould and leaks are the result. It is therefore very important to replace the grouting on time when it is damaged or when a facade renovation is taking place. The advantages of joint replacement are:

  • It is part of facade maintenance and contributes to the value of the house.
  • Preventing moisture and theremee mould and leaks within the house.
  • Makes your facade look like new again

Let the facade be cleaned immediately

When the new pointing has been applied, it is advisable to clean your facade immediately. This way, the new grouting and the bricks will be back to the same level and you will leave your facade looking completely like new.

Cut or cut joints

Cut and cut joints give the house a beautiful static appearance. However, it is true that these types of grouting are very pricey. Only if you really like it very much, it pays to apply these variants of grouting. If not? Then opt for a cheaper variant of grouting. This will suffice perfectly.
