As cheap as possible:
If you want to spend as little money as possible on your fencing and the fencing doesn’t have to be too sturdy, then choose a mesh fence. The cost of a wire mesh fence averages £70 per 25 x 1m roll.
Good value for money:
A popular fence that people often choose if they want a sturdy fence, but don’t want to spend a handful of money on the fencing, is the double-rod fence. The cost of double-rod mesh fencing averages £50 per metre.
Good quality:
When looking for fencing for your balcony, you always want the best quality. You don’t want to risk the fencing giving way or breaking if someone leans against it. This is why balcony fencing has a slightly higher price. The price of balcony fencing is on average £120 per metre.

What choices determine fencing prices?
When you go to buy a fence, there are several choices that determine the price.
Choice 1: Material
- Impregnated wood: Ornamental, mesh, barred and double-rod fencing are always made of metal and cannot be made of wood because the details are too detailed for that. If you take wooden fencing, there are several choices of wood. Impregnated wood is a softwood, usually pine or spruce, that is resistant to mould and insects with an impregnating agent. Impregnated wood lasts about 15 to 25 years and costs between £70 and £140.
- Hardwood: Hardwood is wood of the best quality. It is very solid wood and therefore it also lasts a lot longer than lower-quality wood such as impregnated wood. Hardwood lasts for more than 25 years and does not need to be treated. The cost of a hardwood fence is between £140 and £250 per m2.
- Metal: Ornamental, mesh, barred and double-rail fencing is always made of metal, as they are too elaborate to be made of wood. A metal fence is generally always delivered galvanised. Galvanising your fencing is necessary because it prevents your fence from rusting. Galvanised fencing always has a silver-grey colour, which is why many people choose to have their fencing coated after galvanisation. Your fencing is then coated in a green or black colour for an extra 10%. For a surcharge of another 10%, you can have the fencing coated in another colour. This costs more money because other colours usually have to be ordered separately.
Choice 2: The style of your fencing
- An ornamental fence is a fence with a classic look. You can make an ornamental fence as ornate as you like by, for example, adding accessories such as ornamental balls. Ornamental fencing costs on average £ 65 per metre.
- Gauze fencing:Gauze fencing is the cheapest fencing, but prices vary depending on the type of mesh. Wire mesh fencing is always supplied in rolls. Per roll of 25 x 1m, you pay on average £70 for wire mesh fencing.
- Bar fencing: A bar fence is the tighter version of an ornamental fence. It is a very sturdy fence, which is why it is often used on business premises, but a bar fence is also well suited for a garden fence. The price of a bar fence is on average £60 per m2.
- Double bar fence: Another popular fencing is the double bar fence. This fencing is so popular because it is very sturdy, yet reasonably cheap. Double-rod mesh fencing costs on average £50 per metre.
- Balcony fencing: If you have balustrade installed on your balcony, you also have several choices. For example, you can take a wooden balustrade, an ornamental balustrade or a glass balustrade. Their prices vary a lot, but the average price for a balcony railing is £120 per metre. This is slightly more expensive on average, because in places where there is a risk of falling, the quality of the fencing needs to be good to be trusted.
Choice 3: To have it fitted or not
If you are handy with your hands, some fencing is fairly easy to install yourself. With other fencing, such as balcony fencing, which needs to be installed very precisely, it is wiser to have your fencing installed by a specialist. You can request fencing quotes and then make the choice of doing it yourself or having it done. The installation costs differ per fence. The installation costs are shown in the table below: £ 20
Sier fencing£ 10 – £ 20
Double bar mat fencing£ 10 – £ 25 Sier fencing£ 10 – £ 25
Choice 4: Additional options
The options below are not necessary but are extras to consider for your fencing.
