As cheap as possible:
You will be most economical if you buy a wooden walkway gate. A pedestrian gate is a small gate that no cars can pass through. If you opt for a small walk-in gate made of impregnated wood, this will cost around £250.
Somewhat more expensive:
If you prefer a metal drive-in gate without too much fuss that cars can pass through, then a barred gate is suitable for you. A coated turnstile gate is priced between £500 and £900.
Beautiful and suitable for cars:
If you want a drive-in gate that your car can pass through that has a nice ornate look, then choose a ornamental gate of 3 metres wide. The price for this is between £1,450 and £2,000.
Great and good quality:
If you want to invest in a drive-in gate with a long lifespan, choose a hardwood sliding gate. For a 3-metre-wide hardwood sliding gate, count on a price around £4,500.

Choices determine the price of your gate
The price of a gate and drive-in gate is determined by the 6 choices below.
Choice 1: The material of the gate.
- Wood gate: Gates and entrance gates are always made of wood or metal. The cheapest material is soft impregnated wood. This wood lasts 10 to 15 years. If you want your gate to last longer, it is smarter to go for a hardwood gate. Hardwood is the sturdiest wood for outdoors and does not need to be maintained. Logically, this does make the gate more expensive. Hardwood lasts longer than 25 years and is therefore strongly recommended for your gate. A 1-metre hardwood gate is between £500 and £1,100.
- Metal:Sierce gates, barred gates and barred gates are always made of metal, because these gates have details that cannot be made of wood. It is wise to have your metal gate galvanised; this will prevent rusting. A galvanised gate has a silver-grey colour. If silver-grey is not your favourite colour: for a 10% surcharge, you can have your gate coated in green or black. With such a coating, your gate or drive-in gate is also better protected against rust. For a further 10% surcharge, your gate or entry door is coated in another colour of your choice. This costs more as this has to be ordered separately.
Choice 2: The style of your gate.
- Siergate: An ornamental gate gives your garden a beautiful and classic look. An ornamental gate can be placed in your fencing, but is also often placed freestanding. An ornamental gate is a relatively cheap choice and is available between £ 130 and £ 300. As a drive-in gate, they are available between £ 400 and £ 900: A swing gate is a gate with 1 or 2 doors that open, this makes it an ideal drive-in gate. Because the doors open, this gate needs extra space on the inside or outside. The average cost for a swing gate is £800.
- Bar mat gate: A bar mat gate is very popular because it is very sturdy and also not very expensive. A bar mat fence is made up of mats with horizontal and vertical bars. The average cost of a bar mesh gate is between £480 and £580, for a drive-in gate between £1,450 and £1,750.
Choice 3: What kind of entrance do you choose?
- Walkgate: A walk-in gate is small and only suitable for pedestrians. A pedestrian gate is the cheapest option for a gate and costs an average of £250.
- Turnip gate: A swing gate is a gate with 1 or 2 doors that open. Because the doors open, this gate needs extra space on the inside or outside. The average cost for a swing gate is £800.
- Sliding gate: If a swing gate takes up too much space because it opens inwards or outwards, a sliding gate is a good option. The sliding gate slides open to the side and therefore needs more space in width. The average cost of a sliding gate is £1,800. A sliding gate is heavy and is therefore often automated.
The average cost per type of gate is shown in the table below.
Type of gate | Average prices |
---|---|
Walk gate | £250 |
Turn gate | £800 |
Sliding gate | £1.800 |
Electric swing gate | £ 3.000 |
Electric sliding gate | £ 5,000 |
Choice 4: Do you want an electric gate?
Turnstiles and sliding gates are often automated, because the entrance gates are heavy, but mainly so you don’t have to get out of your car to open the gate. With a sliding gate, there is 1 type of motor available, the price of which is between £400 and £2,000.
When buying a swing gate, you have a choice between 3 different motors:
- Linear (basic) motor: This is the most commonly sold motor. This type of motor can be fitted quickly and easily. The price of this is between £300 and £1,200.
- Knikarm motor: This motor is usually used when the gates hang between two masonry walls, making a linear motor impossible. The price is between £500 and £800.
- Underground motor: The advantage of an underground motor is that the motor cannot be seen. The price is between £1,100 and £3,000.
Choice 5: Have your gate assembled by a specialist?
When buying a new gate, it is recommended to have it completely assembled by a specialist. The cost of assembly varies from gate to gate. This is because not all gates are the same; some gates are easier to assemble than others. The table below shows the assembly costs per gate.
Type of gate | Mounting costs | |
---|---|---|
Walk gate | £ 65 – £ 130 | |
Turn gate | £ 90 – £ 130 | |
Sliding gate | £ 850 – £ 1.200 | |
Electric swing gate | £ 400 – £ 650 | |
Electric sliding gate | £ 1,200 – £ 1,750 |
Choice 6: Additional options
For your new gate, there are also additional options to think about. They are not required, but they are handy.
Product | Average price |
---|---|
Electric alarm lock | £ 50 to £ 400 |
Intercom | £ 200 to £ 300 |
Coating | £ 10% extra |
