Which fencing will you have installed?
Think about what function you would like your new fencing to have, that’s how you’ll determine which fencing is suitable for your garden. See below for each function the type of fencing that is best for it.
Creating privacy
The most privacy you can create is by installing a completely closed fence around your garden. A wooden fence is the most suitable for this, or a fence. Another option for creating privacy is to place a double-rod fence and let plants grow through it. This way, you combine lots of greenery in the garden with privacy.
Burglary protection
If you want your fencing to serve as burglary protection, you have several options for fencing. For example, by choosing an ornamental fence with points or a bar fence, you make it dangerous to climb over these. In addition, these fences offer a clear view of the garden, making burglars more likely to be caught by neighbours and passers-by. If you opt for the combination of more privacy and burglary protection, it is wise to install a high fence. Another option is to alternate the high fence with a low fence, giving you privacy for part of the garden and an unobstructed view for part of it.
Demarcating large areas
Does your fencing have the sole purpose of demarcating an area or sealing off space for animals? Then mesh fencing is very suitable. Wire mesh fencing is the cheapest variety of fencing, very simple, but very functional for enclosing (large) pieces of land.
Tips for installing a fence
Installing a fence is often quite a project. If you want your fencing to be safe and to be enjoyed for years to come, it needs to be done properly and accurately. Read the tips below on having a fence installed to keep your project on track.
1. Take a good look at the regulations for installing a fence
A fence up to a height of 2 metres may be installed licence-free, above 2 metres you need to make an application to the municipality. It is also important that you have the fencing placed in your own yard. If you place the fencing on the municipality’s property, you could be fined. Is it not clear where you can place the fence? Request a cadastral map from the Land Registry (for a fee) that clearly shows the plot boundary. Is the fence in the neighbour’s yard? Then read tip 3 to save on the cost of your fencing.
2. Have a specialist install your fence
A fence is often a big investment. To enjoy it as long as possible, it is important that the fencing is expertly installed to ensure quality and safety. After all, you don’t want your fencing to hang or even fly away during the first autumn storm. And if you place the fence too close to the ground, there is a good chance that the underside will rot quickly. A specialist will have your fencing firmly in place within a day, according to the rules.
3. Think beforehand about what exactly you are having installed
A lot is involved in installing fencing. So make sure you are well prepared, both for yourself and the specialist. Firstly, it is important to be sure of the dimensions of your garden so that you buy the right number of metres of fencing. Secondly, the ground in which your fencing will be placed is an important element. Are you installing a low fence? Then the ground stake needs to be driven 80 cm into the ground. Would you prefer more privacy and place a high fence? Then the ground stake needs to be driven 100 cm into the ground. To do this, you need to be sure that the soil in your garden is solid enough to hold a ground stake and that there are no important pipes running through it. A specialist checks the ground where the fencing will be placed
