Price examples

To help you estimate the total cost, below are three price examples of common projects. Would you like to know the exact price of your project? Then request several free, no-obligation quotes via Renoca.

Grass mowing only

Want to have your lawn maintained, but don’t want to spend too much money? Then only have your lawn mowed. This will cost an average of £25 to £30 for a 100 m² lawn.

Draining your lawn only

If moss, weeds and mowing your grass have created a thatch layer on the grass, it is important to scarify your lawn. Scarifying your lawn keeps moss from displacing the grass. Scarifying costs between £100 and £130 for a 100 m² lawn. Then first have your grass scarified and then mowed. It is also possible to mow it first, but all moss and weeds need to be removed first. Maintaining a garden takes on average 4 hours and the cost of a gardener per hour is between £35 and £50. The total cost then comes out to an average of £140 to £200.

What choices determine lawn maintenance prices?

There are several choices that determine the cost of maintaining your lawn. Check here which choices they are.

Choice 1: Lawn scarification or lawn mowing

Lawn mowing

To keep your lawn beautiful and healthy, it is important to mow your lawn regularly. It is best to mow it on time, as if the grass gets too long it is more difficult to cut. Especially during the growing season (from May to October), it is best for the lawn to be mowed weekly. Having your lawn mowed costs between £25 and £30 for a lawn up to 100 m².

Letting your lawn be scarified

After some time, a felt layer forms in the grass, this is a layer of dried grass, moss, weeds and organic waste. A thin layer of thatch is good for your lawn, but if it becomes too thick it will start to choke your lawn and crowd out the grass. It is therefore important to scarify your lawn about twice a year. You do this as soon as the night frost has disappeared. It is recommended to scarify the lawn once in the months of March and August. Scarifying costs £100 to £140 for a lawn of up to 100 m².

Choice 2: What kind of machines are used?

Grass mower small lawn

If you have your lawn done by a gardener he will bring his own equipment, the cost of the machines is therefore already included in the price, but the price depends on it. If you have a small lawn, the grass can easily be cut with a smaller type of mower such as a walk-behind mower, a push mower or a reel mower. The cost of these devices is lower so a gardener will then charge less per hour.

Large lawn mower

If you have a large lawn, for example a lawn from 500 m², it is too much work for a gardener to mow it with a smaller lawn mower. So a larger lawn mower is often used for this, such as a riding mower. The gardener’s cost per hour then becomes a bit higher as these lawn mowers are more expensive.

Electric scarifier

As with lawn mowers, the cost of the materials is already included in the gardener’s prices. A gardener uses an electric scarifier for flat and small areas. An electric scarifier is also mostly used by hobbyists.

Benzine scarifier

A petrol scarifier is most commonly used by gardeners. These machines are stronger than the electric machines and they are suitable for multiple use, so they can also be used if the gardener needs to scarify larger areas or lawns with more uneven surfaces.

Choice 3: Maintain it yourself or hire a gardener?

Maintaining a garden is something many people do themselves. Yet it takes more time and effort to maintain a lawn properly than most people think. It is important to mow the grass regularly (weekly in the growing season) and scarifying should be done twice a year. You need machinery for this and it will also cost you time and energy. If you don’t do this, your lawn will soon look pale and bare, and sometimes it will even be damaged beyond repair.

So keeping up your lawn properly is very important. If you don’t feel like doing this, it is wise to hire a gardener. A gardener has all the knowledge and resources to keep your lawn healthy all year round. Depending on the work, a gardener will cost between £35 and £55 per hour.

Choice 4: Additional options

The following options are optional; you do not have to have these options done, but if you want to outsource all lawn maintenance to a gardener, these costs will be added.

Service Price When do you have this done
Grass removal £2.50 – £3 per 25 m² of mowing This is the removal of the grass left behind after mowing.
Dispose of scarifying greenery £ 5 – £ 6 per 25 m² of scarifying After scarifying, greenery is left behind, this is rubbish such as weeds and moss. This still needs to be removed after scarifying.
Edge cutting £ 0.50 – £ 0.75 per metre Provides a perfectly finished grass edge.
