What does shoring cost?

The exact cost of shoring depends on the labour costs that gardeners charge, the material you choose and whether you go for custom-made wattle or prefabricated bulkheads.

The table below shows the average cost for custom-made wattle fence made of hardwood per running metre:

Type of work Average cost per running metre
Old embankment removal £ 70 – £ 150
Install new sheet piling £ 250 – £ 400

Would you like to have plastic sheet piling installed? Then keep in mind the following average prices per linear metre. Note that prices for the posts of around £20 to £50 per post are added to this. £ 50

800 mm (4 planks high)£ 50 – £ 75 1000 mm (5 planks high)£ 60 – £ 85

The prices above are only an indication of the costs. Would you like an exact estimate of the prices in your situation? Then request a quote.

What types of shoring are there?

It is important to choose the right material of shoring so that you get the maximum benefit from its construction. We have already quickly reviewed wooden and plastic shoring in the price chart. However, there is also the option of having concrete shoring installed. We will tell you more about the advantages and disadvantages of the various materials.

Wood shoring

Wood shoring is durable. Hardwood is also not susceptible to moisture or mould, so it will last for a long time: up to 20 to 25 years.

Plastic shoring

Plastic shoring costs less than hardwood. It also lasts longer and is not affected by the weather. However, many people prefer the natural look of hardwood to the look of plastic.

Concrete embankment

Concrete is strong. Very strong. If you need to shore up a long waterfront and therefore need a strong material that is maintenance-free, concrete shore protection is the best option. However, concrete is more expensive than wood or plastic. If the shoring does not need such high load-bearing capacity, wood or plastic shoring is a more logical option.

Which material shoring do you choose?

Which shoring you choose depends largely on your budget and the look you want. The layout of your garden also counts. Do you want a terrace by the water or does your driveway border on the water’s edge? If so, you need shoring that can take a heavy load. Concrete is then the best choice. Is the load less and is a natural look important to you? Then choose wooden shoring. Do you want low maintenance shoring? Then plastic is an excellent option.

How long should the shoring posts be?

To determine how long the shoring posts should be, you need to know the retaining height of the shoring. To do this, measure the distance from the bottom of the ditch at the water’s edge to the cutting height of your adjacent land. As a rule, the post should be three times as long as the retaining height, so that 2/3rds of the post can be placed under the ground. So if the revetment height is one metre, you will need a three-metre pole.

Does the shoring need to be anchored?

Is shoring 80 cm or longer required? Then as a rule it should be anchored to prevent the embankment from warping. For a nice, straight shoring, anchoring is always recommended, even if the embankment is lower than 80 cm.

Frequently asked questions

Is shoring free of permit?

Many times a permit is required to replace shoring. Whether this is necessary varies from one water board to another. So you will have to enquire about this. Sometimes there is only an obligation to report and no permit is required.

Can you install a sheet piling yourself?

If you are an experienced do-it-yourselfer, it may be possible to install the sheet piling yourself, but it is advisable to have this done by a specialist. Installing a embankment must be done with at least two people and requires different equipment and machinery. Moreover, there are different requirements for embankment protection

How long will shoring last?

If it is installed correctly and good materials are chosen, shoring can last at least 20 to 25 years. However, maintenance is important.
