Request a permit before having a tree removed

Before having your tree removed by a professional, it is important to check whether you need a permit. Each municipality has its own rules on this, so it is very important that you check whether and which permit you need. Through the Omgevingsloket you can do an online permit check. You will then immediately see:

  • Whether or not you need a permit
  • Whether or not you need to report the felling

If you can only cut down the tree with a permit, you need to apply to your municipality for an environmental permit. You can only apply for this permit if you own the land on which the tree stands. You have to pay for the permit application. The amount depends on the municipality in which you live.

In this application you explain which tree it is, how you want to cut it down and why you want to cut it down. Most municipalities issue an environmental permit if the tree meets one of the following characteristics:

  • The tree causes a lot of shade or obstructs visibility
  • The tree is diseased or in very poor condition
  • The tree poses a danger to the surrounding area
  • The tree damages cables, pipes, paving or sewers
  • The tree is too close to the property boundary
  • The tree is too close to another tree

After the application, the municipality will make a decision within 8 weeks.

The pruning of the tree is always allowed, however, with large branches you may still need a permit. So always check with your municipality.

Tips for removing a tree

The removal of a tree is quite an undertaking, so all tips are good. The tips below will help you on your way:

  1. Find an experienced climbing gardener
    By choosing a gardener or landscaper who is familiar with the climbing technique (the gardener then climbs the tree and cuts it down from above, after which the branches are carefully lowered with a rope), you avoid using an aerial platform. The climbing technique is suitable for removing trees that do not have enough room to fall over. Using an aerial work platform causes damage to your lawn and is often a lot more expensive than the climbing technique.
  2. Let’s remove the stump too
    After the tree is cut down, the stump remains. This is obviously not useful if you have other plans for the space where the tree used to be. Tell your gardener that you want the stump removed. The gardener will do this with a stump grinder and it takes less than an hour. The gardener may take care of removing the wood, but you can also reuse it yourself. For example, have the wood chipped for a path in the garden, or have it cut into blocks to use for firewood. In this way, you will quickly clear away the waste in the garden and be environmentally responsible.

The benefits of having a tree removed

A tree in the garden soon becomes an obstacle when it grows too big or has branches that are too long. Call in a gardener to remove the tree and enjoy the following benefits:

  • more sunlight in the garden;
  • less work on garden maintenance;
  • more space in the garden for a cosy terrace, for example;
  • less chance of aphids in the garden;
  • other plants in the garden grow better due to more sunlight.
