Excavation for a walkway

If you want to lay a new walkway in your garden, and first excavate the old soil to fill it with sand, the soil does not have to be dug very deep. For a walkway, 15 cm of excavation is sufficient, for which you pay an average of £ 10 to £ 18 per m². The specialist will excavate the soil, fill it with new sand and then remove the old soil.

Excavation for a driveway

The heavier the new soil will be loaded in the future, the deeper the excavation should be and the more sand is needed. So for a driveway where cars will be parked, dig the soil deeper, as it will be heavily loaded. For a driveway, excavate about 20 cm. For the excavation, removal and backfilling of 20 cm of soil you will pay around £ 15 to £ 20 per m².

Excavation for pond

If you want to have a piece of soil excavated without backfilling because you want a pond in your garden, for example, then you do not have the cost of backfilling. The excavation and removal without backfilling costs on average £12.50 to £17.50 per m².

What choices determine garden excavation prices?

There are several choices that affect the price of digging your garden.

Choice 1: What is the size of the piece to be excavated?

The size of the piece of soil to be excavated obviously determines the price. In principle, digging a larger garden is more expensive, but it is relatively cheaper than digging a small garden. This is because digging a larger piece of soil is often relatively cheaper per m² than a smaller piece. This does not apply to every gardener, so if you want to have a large piece of garden excavated, it is smart to look for gardeners who charge less per m² for a larger garden.

Choice 2: What material will it be filled with?

If the professional has to dig the area deep, it is advisable to use lava or crushed rubble when filling in in addition to sand, and to put a layer of sand on top. Lava and crushed rubble create a stronger surface. The professional adds this if the piece of ground is subjected to heavier loads, such as for a driveway. Crushed rubble is more economical than lava. On the other hand, lava is much lighter and can often be ordered in a finer gradation than crushed rubble.

Choice 3: Additional options

After excavating your garden, it is usually also raised. The professional uses big bags with sand to heighten your garden. With a 1500 kg big bag you can raise approximately 20 m² by 5 cm. The options below are not necessary for every project, but it is wise to check whether you need one or more of these options for your project.

Product Average price Why
Sand Bigbag (1500 kg) £ 65 This is the top layer of the subgrade.
Broken rubble Bigbag (1500 kg) £ 80 Provides a stronger substrate and is economical.
Lava (granules) Bigbag (1500 kg) £ 120 Makes for a stronger subgrade and is light
