The cost of laying grass is determined by how big your lawn is. Prices for different sizes can be seen in the table above. If you are going to refurbish your garden with a 70 m² lawn, you will pay £8 per m². The total price will then be £560.
Grass removal
You may also want to have a lawn removed because you want to do something else with that piece of land, for example have it paved. In that case, engage a landscaper to remove the grass for you, and then also clean up the remaining mess straight away. For removing grass from a small lawn (0-50 m²), you pay an average of £ 4 per m². So if you have a 30 m² lawn, you will pay an average of £ 120 for its removal.
Clearing and laying grass
Do you have an old lawn that is no longer beautiful, because it has bald patches that can no longer be repaired, for example? To get a beautiful lawn again, it makes sense to have it completely re-laid. For both laying and removing grass, the larger a lawn is, the lower the price per m² is. If you have a 120 m² lawn that needs to be removed and re-laid, you will pay on average £ 3 per m² for removal and £ 7 per m² for laying. What choices determine the price of laying turf?
If you are going to lay out your garden by laying turf, there are several choices that determine the price.
Choice 1: do it yourself or outsource it?
If you want to save on the costs of laying turf in your garden, you can of course lay the turf yourself. You then only buy the turf and do not pay for the cost of a landscaper. This is cheap garden construction. The average prices of turf can be found in the table below:

For example, if you need turf for a 55 m² lawn, you will pay £1.95 per m². The total price then comes to £107.25. If you have this done by a gardener, you will pay £8 per m², bringing the total cost to £440. So you pay a bit more for the construction by a gardener, but you also get a lot in return:
- A landscaper will fertilise, roll and level the surface;
- The turf will be cut very precisely;
- The turf will be expertly laid so that no seams can be seen;
- The soil will be pressed with a grass roller for an optimal growth process;
- Afterwards, the garden will be neatly tidied up for you.
In short, it saves you a lot of work and a landscaper always ensures the best result so you will enjoy the lawn for a long time.
Choice 2: The size of the lawn
The size of your lawn largely determines the amount of the turf laying price. A larger lawn will cost more than a small one, but the larger the area is, the lower the cost per m² will be. If you want to have a large area of grass laid, it may seem a lot more expensive, but it is actually relatively very inexpensive. Especially outsourcing it to a landscaper is more advantageous, as it is sometimes almost as expensive when you lay it yourself.
Choice 3: Replacing the old lawn?
Would you like to replace your old lawn? Over the years, moss and weeds may have significantly affected your lawn. Sometimes the grass is so difficult to repair that it is better to just replace the lawn. Replacing a lawn may seem like a lot of work, but this is not that much. Within 1 day, you can already enjoy a completely new lawn. The cost of replacing a lawn is very easy to calculate. You pay for the removal of the grass per m² and you also pay for the installation of the grass per m². For a 40 m² lawn, you pay £ 9 per m² for laying it, and £ 4 per m² for removing the old lawn. The calculation then becomes: £ 9 x 40 m² + £ 4 x 40 m² = £ 520 in total for a completely renewed lawn.
