Priciest patio cover
The most economical is a prefabricated patio cover. The model is already ready and only needs to be installed. The price for a prefabricated patio covering is on average £2,000. Think of a wooden construction with a wooden or polycarbonate roof. This price is without extras such as glass in the roof or electricity.
Most common terrace covering
To have a terrace covering made to measure is most common. This gives you the opportunity to choose materials you like and decide, down to the centimetre, how long and wide it will be. On average, a custom-made patio cover costs £3,500.
Expensiveest patio cover
A custom-made patio cover is the most expensive option. The canopy is specially designed according to your requirements. In addition, the price depends on the extras you choose. The most expensive option has glass domes in the roof, a drainpipe, electricity under the canopy and a bitumen roof covering. You pay an average of £7,500 for this.

What choices determine the cost of a patio canopy?
Prices depend on several choices. Using the choices below, write down your wishes in advance. If you don’t know exactly what looks good in your garden, you can also ask a garden architect to give you advice and/or create a garden design for you.
Choice 1: Made-to-measure or prefab
The way you build your patio covering makes a big difference in price. So think carefully about what you want and which form best suits it.
- Customisation:Do you have specific wishes? Then customisation is the way to get your own unique patio cover. Size, material, colour, everything is up to you. Everything is assembled in your garden.
- Prefab: Would you like all the advantages of a patio covering, but for the lowest price? Then choose a prefabricated canopy. This variant is already made in the factory and delivered ready-made to your garden. Because these patio covers are mass-produced, the price is a lot lower than custom-made ones.
Choice 2: Size
Prices go up or down depending on the size of the patio cover. Most people choose a width proportional to the house for optimal results and a depth of 3 metres. However, not every canopy is attached to a house. For a detached canopy, a square shape of 3 metres by 3 metres is usually adopted. Per m² it costs on average £ 300.
Choice 3: Material
Terrace canopies are made of different materials. The most common materials are: aluminium, steel and wood.
- Wood:A wooden patio cover is made of hardwood and provides a natural look. Wood, unlike aluminium and steel, requires maintenance every year and has a lifespan of 30 years. The purchase cost, on the other hand, is the lowest.
- Aluminium:Aluminium is a light material and does not rust or rot. An aluminium patio cover is therefore maintenance-free and has a long lifespan of 50 years on average. Prices are on average slightly higher than wooden patio covers, but lower than steel.
- Steel:A steel patio cover is the most expensive. Steel is heavier than aluminium so the posts are narrower. The steel does need to be hot-dip galvanised to prevent rust. A steel patio covering has an average lifespan of 50 years.
Choice 4: Additional options
To provide the patio covering with extra comfort and a longer lifespan, you have several options.
Extra options | Average additional price (incl. installation and VAT) |
---|---|
Rain pipe | £ 250 |
Electricity | £ 400 |
Bitumen roofing | £ 500 |
Glass in roof | £ 1.000 |
