If you want to invest in double-glazing in your windows to reduce your energy costs, of course you first want to know more about double-glazing prices. Renoca has taken the preliminary research off your hands, giving you a good overview of prices and options.

What does double glazing cost?

The ideal thickness of double glazing in your home depends on the size of the room and the size of the window. The bigger the room and the window, the thicker the glass should be. You can already get double-glazing with a thickness of 4 millimetres from £45 per m². If you opt for 8-millimetre thickness, double-glazing prices start at £65 per m². Of course, there are few windows with exactly a certain m² of glass. In the table below, see what an average project costs including installation. It also shows what you will save annually because of the insulating effect. On average, you will recoup the investment in double-glazing in 10 to 15 years. £ 240

Price examples

In the price table you can see an overview of the average prices. The prices are explained using three examples:

Highest savings: replacing all windows

You want to save as much as possible on energy costs, so you have all the windows in your terraced house replaced with double-glazed windows. The total area of all windows together is 15 m². The double-glazing prices for this project start at £2,000.

Dulled window

A ball through the kitchen window; it can happen to anyone. However, the glass needs to be replaced. You opt for double-glazing. Glass replacement in this situation – a 1.4 sq m window – will cost you around £180 to £240 if you are not insured for it.

Small project

The single-glazed windows in the front door let in too much cold air, which means you are using more energy than necessary. You decide to replace them with double-glazed windows. The double-glazing prices of these four windows of 60 by 80 centimetres each come out to £250 to £300.

What costs comprise the double-glazing prices?

Cost overview Double-glazing prices

Double-glazing prices are made up of labour costs, material costs, call-out costs and disposal costs. The call-out charges are affected by the distance between the company and your home. In addition, you can choose to have the glazier dispose of the old glass so that you are not left with the mess. You can influence labour costs by comparing several quotes and choosing the best deal. Average labour costs are £40 to £70 per m² or £35 to £45 per hour. The placement of glass is generally done within one working day. Material costs depend on some choices you make. These choices are explained in more detail below.

What choices affect the price?

When buying glass, you have a number of choices to make:

Choice 1: What thickness?

The two panes of double-glazing each have a different thickness. The glass on the outside is at least as thick or thicker than the glass on the inside. Which thickness suits your home partly depends on your window frames and the size of the room. So if in doubt, always ask a glazier for advice. You have the following choices for double glazing:

Outside glass Inside glass Average price per m²
4 mm 4 mm £ 42
5 mm 4 mm £ 45
6 mm 4 mm £ 50
6 mm 5 mm £ 52
8 mm 5 mm £ 64
8 mm 6 mm £ 66
Choice 2: Safety glass or not?

In addition to standard double glazing, you can also opt for safety glass. Safety glass is specially made to prevent serious accidents should the glass break.

  • Laminated: Laminated glass consists of two sheets of glass with a film in between. When the glass breaks, it does not break into pieces because of this foil, but remains one piece. Laminated glass is more fire-resistant and burglar-proof than ordinary glass. Double-glazing prices for laminated glass are between £60 and £100 per m².
  • Toughened: Toughened glass is five times stronger than ordinary glass. If toughened glass does break, it will fall apart in pieces. These shards are not sharp, preventing injuries. Toughened glass costs between £40 and £80 per square metre.
  • Wire glass: Wire glass is burglar-resistant glass that contains steel wires. This makes the glass sturdier and it does not break easily into small pieces. Double-glazing prices for wired glass are on average £40 to £60 per m².
Choice 3: Ventilation grids or not?

In addition to replacing glass, you also have the choice of having ventilation grids fitted. Ventilation grills ensure drier air in the house, preventing mould and wood rot. So ventilation grills are good for your health. In addition, drier air is heated faster, which in turn saves on energy costs. Small ventilation grids are available from £ 15 and large ventilation grids from £ 60. You can always get a quotation with and without ventilation grids and then make your choice. Then forezet windows are a good alternative. This involves placing a sheet of glass, including a frame, against the inside of the current window. This has the same effect as double-glazing and is an easy-to-install alternative. Front windows cost between £120 and £160 per m², including installation.
