What choices affect glass damage prices?

To delve deeper into the factors on which the price depends, read more about the different choices below.

Choice 1: Glass type

When replacing your windows for glass damage, you can choose between different types of glass. The most common types of glass are:

  • double glazing
  • single glass
  • fireproof glass
  • wired glass
  • toughened glass
  • layered glass
  • plexiglass

Each type of glass has its own prices as you could already see in the first table. For example, HR++ glass (double glazing with argon gas in the cavity) is about 20% more expensive than single glazing, but you will recoup this by saving money on your energy bill.

Choice 2: Thickness of the glass

Glass is available in different thicknesses. If you choose the thinnest glass you will have a thickness of 4 millimetres. The thicker the glass, the more expensive it is. Do discuss carefully with the specialist what best suits your home. If you choose the cheapest glass and the insulation value is very low, you will not save on energy costs. Simple thin glass can be sufficient in, for example, a shed where there are no valuables and where the window serves purely to let in light.

Choice 3: Modify or replace your window frame?

When glass is damaged, it is a necessity to replace your window. If your window frames are bad due to moisture and wood rot, it is wise to tackle them immediately. You will pay around £ 700 to £ 850 per window for a new frame and the transition from single to double glazing. Below is a price indication of the cost of having frames replaced.

Type of window frame Average prices for 2.5 m² Advantage
Plastic £850 – £1,300 Long lifespan (50 years), low maintenance costs
Wood £2.000 – £ 3,000 Strongly insulating, warm look
Aluminium £ 2,500 – £ 3,200 Does not rust or rot, modern look
Choice 4: Additional option

In addition to replacing your windows, it is also possible to install a ventilation grille. This is because good ventilation ensures that air in your home heats up faster by keeping the air in the house drier. A small ventilation grid is available from £15 and a large one from £60. This way, you can choose to have thinner glasses installed in combination with a ventilation grid. In addition, ventilation grilles are good for your health. Do you have few windows you can open? Then a ventilation grid is also recommended.
