Fitting Velux windows: the possibilities and advantages

The Velux brand offers many different types of skylights, dormers and accessories. To guide you, we list the most popular types of Velux windows below:

  • Tumbler windows
  • Tumbler windows
  • Integra skylights
  • Daylight systems
  • Velux dormer windows

Tumbler windows

The hinges of Velux’s tumbler windows are attached to the outside of the window. This allows you to ‘tumble’ the skylight 180 degrees. You therefore keep the glass easily clean. Also, the operating handle on the top of the window contains a ventilation flap so you always let fresh air in. A Velux rocker window costs an average of £530, including VAT and installation.

Top-hung windows

Velux top-hung windows work basically the same as ‘normal’ rocker windows. Yet the windows differ from each other. Besides the 180-degree pivot function, it is possible to turn off the roof pitch up to 45 degrees. When you expand this window, the hinge point is at the top of the skylight. This creates an even more expansive view and brings in more light. The Velux top-hung pivot window is mainly used when the roof window is placed high, for example above a kneeboard. The price of these top-hung windows is a bit higher than Velux’s normal tumble windows. On average, you pay £750 for them, including VAT and installation.

Integra skylights

For those for whom an (push-out) tumble window is not enough, there is the integra skylight from Velux. This luxury Velux roof window is remote controlled, making it Velux’s most comfortable roof window. When fixing this skylight, you will receive a control tablet. This allows you to open or close the skylight from anywhere in the house. Do you ever forget to close your windows before you leave? With Velux’s Integra roof windows, that’s no problem. The rain sensor automatically closes the windows when it detects rain. The disadvantage of Integra skylights is that the price of this type is usually a few hundred euros higher than the above types.

Daylight systems

(top-hung) rocker windows and Integra Velux skylights already provide the room with plenty of daylight, but a Velux daylight system illuminates even the furthest corners of the room. In addition, daylight systems increase the ambience of the room, due to the wider view this type of skylight allows.

Daylight systems from Velux are available in the following combinations:

  • Horizontal duo: two Velux windows side by side
  • Horizontal triple: three Velux windows side by side
  • Vertical duo: two Velux windows one above the other
  • Vertical triple: three Velux windows one above the other

In addition to these four standard options, Velux offers the possibility of putting together your own daylight system. We advise you to consult a specialist for the price information on this.

Velux dormers

Velux dormers have a big advantage: you do not need a permit for their installation. Moreover, installation of Velux dormers takes only one day. Velux dormers come in different types. For example, you can choose from a custom-made dormer or a conservatory dormer that lets in up to three times more sun. You’ll pay around £3,500 to £8,000 for a Velux dormer.

Other types of Velux windows

In addition to the Velux window types commonly chosen above, there are a number of other types available:

  • Light tunnels. Does your home offer hardly any window options, but you want natural light in your home? Then light tunnels are a good option. Velux’s light tunnels feature ‘edgeflow’. This ring of glass provides the room with bright light that creates a natural light.
  • Flat-roof windows. Velux offers two types of flat-roof windows. Flat roof windows with curved glass are suitable for roofs with a roof pitch of 0 – 15 degrees. This ensures optimal rain drainage. To avoid accumulated water on a flat-roof window with flat glass, the roof pitch should be at least 5 degrees.
  • Balcony windows. Have you always wanted a balcony window, but your budget was not enough? Velux offers relatively inexpensive balcony windows, which are much like a balcony.
