Laminated glass provides insulation, soundproofing and safety. Laminated glass consists of multiple sheets of glass with a film placed between them. This film holds the glass together in case of any breakage. So when you use this glass as a door, this glass door can never fall apart. Would you like more information about laminated glass and are you curious about the average laminated glass price? We will tell you the necessary information in this article.

What does laminated glass cost?

The laminated glass price ranges from £90 to £190 per m², including installation. The difference in price is mainly in whether you go for single-sided laminated glass, double-sided laminated glass or laminated glass with film in between. Check out the cost overview below for average laminated glass prices.

Type of laminated glass Average price, incl. VAT and installation
Single-sided laminated £ 90 – £ 130 per m²
Two-sided laminated £ 130 – £ 170 per m²

Laminated glass price examples

The price table mentioned earlier shows average prices. Below you can see examples where the laminated glass prices are further explained.

Most chosen work

Currently, laminated glass is widely used as a partition or balustrade for both indoor and outdoor use. For example, if you want to have a glass balustrade installed, you can expect an average cost of between £300 and £500.

Larger project

The cost of laminated glass is naturally higher than normal glazing. This is because of the extra security you pay for. In this case, we are talking about a burglar-prone house where a window may have been smashed once or several times to get in. If you want to counter this, you can fit the entire downstairs and upstairs with laminated glass, which acts as a burglar retardant. When replacing six windows of 1,500 by 1,500 millimetres each, you arrive at an average laminated glass price of £2,200.

Detailed project

A smaller project is when there is glass in the back door that has already jumped out twice because the wind keeps pulling the door shut hard. This is dangerous for children but also for yourself. For a small project like this, count on an average laminated glass price between £50 and £100.

What do the prices of laminated glass consist of?

What choices affect the price?

If you have laminated glass installed, the price is determined by three choices.

Choice 1: Thickness of laminated glass

Laminated glass consists of several layers available in several thicknesses. 33.2 or 1212.2 are examples of laminated glass codes, but what do these codes actually mean? Each piece of laminated glass consists of three different parts: toughened glass – film – tempered glass. The first two digits of the code represent the thickness of the glass. The number after the dot represents the number of layers of film. At code 33.2, laminated glass consists of two pieces of glass 3 millimetres thick. Between these two layers there are two layers of foil.

Below is a price indication of the different types of glass and thicknesses in laminated glass.

Glass type and thickness Price per m²
to 3 m² (incl. vat)
Laminated 33.1 £ 20 – £ 50
Laminated 44.1 £ 25 – £ 70
Laminated 55.2 £ 45 – £ 80
Layered 66.2 £ 50 – £ 80
Layered 88.2 £ 80 – £ 150
Layered 33.1 mat £ 40 – £ 70
Layered 44.1 mat £ 50 – £ 80
Layered 55.2 mat £ 65 – £ 100
Layered 66.2 mat £ 70 – £ 120
Layered 88.2 matt £ 80 – £ 150
Choice 2: One-sided laminated glass or two-sided laminated glass

Isolation glass HR++ with two sides laminated safety glass is mainly suitable for situations where extra protection is needed in case of glass breakage. For example, situations in which (sound) insulation properties are important in combination with protection against glass breakage.

When only safety on the inside of the house is required, single-sided laminated glass is often sufficient. Similarly, single-sided laminated glass is sufficient when the only purpose of the glass is to keep heat in. If safety is also important on the outside – think of entrance doors – then two-sided laminated glass is the best choice. However, this comes at a price. Double-sided laminated glass is easily £ 40 per m² more expensive than single-sided laminated glass.

Choice 3: Replacement of window frames

The cost of laminated glass also depends on the window frames. If the window frames also need to be replaced, the cost is automatically higher. Window frames are important parts of your home, but they are also parts that require a lot of maintenance. Window frames face a lot of outside influences. Poor maintenance can cause leaks and draughts. When installing window frames, you choose between plastic, wood or aluminium window frames. Below is a price indication of the expected costs when you have your window frames replaced.

Type of window frame Average prices for 2.5 m² Advantage
Plastic £ 850 – £ 1.300 Long life (50 years), low maintenance costs
Wood £ 2,000 – £ 3.000 Strongly insulating, warm look
Aluminium £ 2,500 – £ 3,200 Does not rust or rot, modern look
