Do you need new single glazing for your windows, but first want to know more about single glazing prices? Do you want to know what options you have and what to look out for? Renoca figured it out and has put the prices and options in a clear overview.

What does single glass cost?

While single glass used to be the norm, it is now much less in demand. Most homes have double-glazing because it saves you more on energy costs. Single glass is mainly found in internal doors and windows. Due to the small demand for single glass, it is no longer mass-produced. This affects single-glazing prices. Many glaziers apply a minimum purchase area of 0.5 m². The single-glass prices including installation at various projects can be found below. £ 160

Single glazing

Some situations will be discussed in terms of different projects and prices:

Small area

An accident happened in the house. Your youngest son has accidentally thrown the dog’s ball through the window of your inner door. You decide to replace the glass at all six small windows in the door. The total area you need is only less than the minimum of half a sq m. You will still pay for half a sq m of single glass because of the mandatory minimum. Single-glass prices for this project cost around £40 to £80 including installation.

Average surface area

You have a pane of glass broken in the kitchen and you want to have new glass installed as soon as possible. You don’t think it is necessary to install double glazing or it is not possible, so you opt for single glazing. For a glass measuring 120 x 80 centimetres, you will pay between £80 and £160. These costs include single-glazing prices and installation.

Large area

You would like more light in the living room and decide to have a glass door installed between the living room and the hall. The total price for this, including hinges, door handle and installation, is on average £250 to £400.

How are single glazing prices composed?

Single glazing prices

The total price of single glazing consists of labour costs, material costs and call-out charges. Labour costs average between £40 and £70 per sq m. Other glaziers charge an hourly rate of £35 to £45. Putting single glass is generally done quickly. Compare quotations to find out which type of labour cost is the cheapest for you. Call-out charges depend on the distance between your home and the glazier. You can have more influence on material costs. Wondering how? Check it out below.

What choices affect the single glazing price?

If you go for single glazing, there are some necessary choices to be made.

Choice 1: Clear or opaque glass?

Do you want clear glass that is easy to see through or do you prefer a variant that offers more privacy? For more privacy, choose sandblasted or patterned glass. On average, opaque glass is more expensive than clear glass. This difference can amount to several tens of euros per m², depending on your wishes.

Choice 2: What thickness?

Single pane glass is available in thicknesses from 2 to 19 millimetres. Prices here range from around £15 per m² for 2 millimetres, to £250 per m² for 19 millimetres. The thicker the glass, the faster the price goes up. For example, the difference between 2 and 5 millimetres is £7 per m², and the difference between 12 and 15 millimetres is about £75. So check what is the right choice for your situation to avoid unnecessary costs. Contact a glazier to determine the optimal thickness of your glass and to find out what single-glazing prices you need to consider.

Choice 3: Safety glass or not?

If you want glass that offers more safety, there are a number of types of safety glass to choose from:

  • Toughened:Toughened glass is five times stronger than ordinary glass. If it does break, it breaks into pieces that are not sharp. This helps you avoid any accidents. Tempered glass is also burglar-proof. Tempered glass costs between £40 and £80 per square metre.
  • Wire glass:Wire glass contains steel wires. This prevents the glass from disintegrating when broken. The visible wires also give the glass a nice effect. The average price of wired glass is between £40 and £60 per square metre.
  • Laminated: Laminated glass also provides extra safety. Only this glass is not a single glass, but consists of two sheets of glass with elastic film in between. The foil keeps the glass from falling apart when cracked or broken. Laminated glass is therefore also burglary-resistant. Laminated glass costs £ 60 to £ 100 per m².
Choice 4: Ventilation grids or not?

Choosing ventilation grids is not necessarily necessary, but they can increase the living comfort in your home. This is because ventilation grilles make the air in your home drier, and drier air reduces the risk of mould and wood rot. In addition, dry air is easier and faster to heat up, allowing you to take full advantage of heating without unnecessarily high energy costs. A small ventilation grid is available from as little as £15 and a large one costs around £60.
