Do you suffer from draughts in your home or has your energy bill increased significantly because you have to heat more? Double glazing will help you save on energy costs. But what does double glazing actually cost? And which type of glass best suits your home? Read the answer to all these questions and more here.
What does double glazing cost?
There are different types of glass on the market to choose from. The main difference between the types of glass is the insulation value. High-efficiency (HR) glass has a higher insulation value than normal double-glazing. HR glass is available in different classes, denoted by pluses. The more pluses, the higher the insulation value of the glass and the more you save on energy costs.
Check the table below to see what double glazing costs on average, and how much you will save.
Type of double glazing | Em. cost per m² incl. installation | Em. savings per year (house with 20 m² glass) | Em. payback time |
---|---|---|---|
Double glazing | £ 120 | £ 140 | 17 years |
HR glass | £ 125 | £ 200 | 13 years |
HR+ glass | £ 130 | £ 220 | 12 year |
HR++ glass | £ 135 | £ 260 | 10 years |

What determines the price of double glazing?
What does double glazing cost and what factors affect double glazing prices? There are several choices and options that determine the final price.
- The type of glass you choose (double glazing, HR glass, HR+ glass, HR++ glass or HR+++ glass)
- The size of the panes (small panes are more expensive because they involve more labour and cutting costs)
- Whether you have the cavity between the glass panes filled with insulating argon gas or dry air
- Whether you have a solar control coating placed on your glass to further increase the insulation value of the glass
- Other special features you add, such as soundproofing, fireproofing or security
- The height at which your windows are located (tall windows are more expensive as scaffolding is needed)
- The number of windows you have replaced (quantity discounts are often available when having multiple windows installed)
What does double-glazing installation cost?
If you are having double-glazing installed, you obviously don’t want to pay too much. 50% of the price usually consists of labour costs. Therefore, by looking carefully for the best glass fitter for your project, you can easily save money. The average hourly rate of a glazier is £50, excluding glass. Sometimes glaziers do not use an hourly rate, but a wage per m². This price is usually between £50 and £70. By having several windows replaced at the same time, you can often get a good deal with your glazier. So replace all your windows at once, or hire a glazier together with your neighbours.
What does double glazing cost per type of home?
Your window area depends on the type of home you have. The larger your window area, the higher the prices for having double glazing installed. Check the table below to see what double glazing costs per type of home.
Home type | Window area in m² | Average total price (incl. places) |
---|---|---|
Apartment | 15 m² | £ 1,800 – £ 2,200 |
Tween house | 20 m² | £ 2,500 – £ 2,800 |
Corner house | 30 m² | £ 3.500 – £4,000 |
Duplex | 35 m² | £4,400 – £4,900 |
Detached house | 50 m² | £6,500 – £7,000 |
Saving tips double-glazing
1. Replace single pane windows with double glazing
Replace all your glazing at once is a big investment. Is your budget not so high but you still want to have double glazing installed in your home? Then replace a number of windows for double glazing, choosing the room you heat the most, such as the living room. This is where you will make the biggest savings on your energy costs and therefore have the highest return.
2. Check whether you get a subsidy
If you choose to have double glazing, HR++ glass or triple glazing installed, the government makes a subsidy available. With the Investment subsidy for sustainable energy and energy saving (ISDE), you can receive 15% subsidy with one insulation measure and 30% with two insulation measures. Check the website of the central government for the different conditions.
