Cost-effective option for a new property:

You have a new-build house where wiring in the walls has been taken into account. You don’t feel the need to go for a very big intrusion protection project, so then you opt for a basic wired alarm system. If there is already wiring, a wired alarm system is easy to install though. For a basic wired alarm system, you pay between £300 and £500.

Fast installation and comprehensive package:

Your house has been broken into and you want to install an alarm system as quickly as possible. You decide to get an extensive package that includes a motion detector, magnetic contact, control panel and smoke detector. Because it needs to be connected quickly, you choose an extensive wireless alarm system. For that, you pay between £500 and £750.

New house and easily expandable security:

When your house was built, wiring was taken into account and you want a good alarm system that is easily expandable, because you want the option to add extra components later. That’s when you choose a hybrid alarm system. A hybrid alarm system starts from £450 and is expandable with whatever you want.

The choices that determine the price of an alarm system

The price of your alarm system is determined by the following 4 choices:

Choice 1: Wired, Wireless or Hybrid
  • Wired: A wired alarm system has the advantages that it is a very reliable system and it often has an easy installation. Installing a wired alarm system is therefore often used in business premises. In a home where there is no wiring yet, it is difficult to install a wired alarm system or add components, so then a wireless system is more often chosen. The cost of a wired system is between £300 and £750.
  • Wireless: A wireless alarm system is easy to install because it has no cables. This also makes it a relatively cheap system. Because it is wireless, it avoids chopping and breaking in your home. With a wireless system, however, there is a risk of malfunctions and the batteries need to be replaced every so often. For a wireless system you pay around £ 300 and £ 950.
  • Hybrid: A hybrid alarm system offers the best of both worlds. A hybrid system is delivered wired and can be expanded with wireless components later if required. A hybrid system is also very reliable due to its wiring and does not suffer from interference. A hybrid system is most suitable for new houses, as wiring can be taken into account during construction. Prices for a hybrid system start from £450.
Choice 2: Which communication dialer do you want? PSTN, LAN or GSM

A communication dialer sends notifications to an alarm centre and/or other numbers you set up yourself. With the more extensive packages, this is usually already included in the price but sometimes you have to add it yourself.

  • PSTN: With a PSTN communication dialer, alarm voice reports are sent. This is done via the landline phone. You choose who these voice reports are sent to. For example, to yourself and the monitoring centre so that action is taken immediately. A PSTN communication dialer is the cheapest and costs between £45 and £65.
  • LAN: A LAN communication dialer is used for communication with an alarm centre via the internet and sometimes also via the landline phone. It is priced between £100 and £135.
  • GSM: A GSM communication dialer sends text messages to alarm centres and other phone numbers you set up yourself. This communicator can also use the internet and send voice reports. The price of a GSM communication communicator is between £200 and £300.
Choice 3: Install it yourself or have it installed by a technician?

Some alarm systems are very easy to install and set up yourself. Especially wireless systems that have already been pre-programmed are fine to hang yourself. Would you prefer more certainty that it will be installed properly? Then hire a specialist. The installation costs for a wired alarm system are often higher than for a wireless system, as it requires more effort. Installation costs are between £150 and £300.

Choice 4: Additional options

The additional options are not necessary for your new alarm system, but are there to make security as optimal as possible.
