If you are looking for a reliable painter who will handle your painting project perfectly, you obviously don’t want to pay too much for it. So get painting quotes. This article contains useful tips so you can find the best painter in no time by comparing.

Why request painting quotes through Renoca?

At Renoca you can request free and no-obligation quotes for your painting project. We only work with painters who are registered with the Chamber of Commerce and we focus on quality.

By filling out one application you will receive up to 6 painting quotes, saving you a lot of time. Your personal details will only be used for the quote request. You are not tied to anything and choose the best painter for your project at the best price.

How does requesting painting quotes work?

1. Get free and non-binding painting quotes here. We ask several details in our quotation form to provide you with the best possible service.

  • The address, so we can recommend painters operating in your area.
  • A project description, so that painters immediately have a good idea of the job and can make you an offer tailored to your situation. This also makes it easier for you to compare the quotes.
  • Your contact details, so that the painters who are going to work on your job can get in touch if there are any uncertainties, or to communicate the best price directly.

What to look out for when comparing painting quotes?

Follow this checklist when comparing painting quotes. That way you can easily find the painter with the best value for money.

Have you already compared the following items?

  • The structure of the total price and whether VAT is included (think: fixed price, price per m2 or per hour).
  • The percentage you have to pay as a deposit.
  • What work is and is not included in the price (think: sanding, pre-treatment, setting up scaffolding).
  • Availability of the painter. Does this fit into your schedule?
  • The guarantee on the paintwork.
  • The quality marks the painter has.

Look for more information on these six points later in this article, such as what the average guarantee period is.

TIP 1 – Make a comparison chart: Put all the important information in a chart so that the data are clearly arranged next to each other. This makes comparing a lot easier. No idea how? Do it the following way, for example:

Name company 1: Name company 2: Name company 3: Name company 4: Name company 5: Name company 6:
Price + price structure
Work included
Availability
Duration of warranty
Marks

TIP 2 – Log all appointments: Do you make new (verbal) agreements after making the first offer? Then have this laid down in writing in a new painting quote. Make sure you have everything in black and white, so that both you and the painter know exactly where you stand.

TIP 3 – Have a look at price guides: Beforehand, have a look at our ‘Painter costs’ price guide, which contains average prices for painting projects: from saucing a wall to giving the whole house a new coat of paint. Reading up on average prices makes comparing prices easier.

Frequently asked questions about painting quotes

1. Does requesting painting quotes involve any cost?

No, requesting painting quotes from Renoca is completely free of charge. Painters pay a fee to give you a free proposal.

2. Does Renoca do the painting work itself?

No, painting companies join our platform. Through our system, your request is matched to painters who match your request.

3. From when is a painting quote valid?

After you have received the quote, you are not yet committed to anything. Only when you have officially accepted, you enter into a binding agreement with the painter. An acceptance can be in writing, by e-mail or verbally. We always recommend agreeing to the painting quote in writing, so that you have everything in black and white.

4. What is best: a fixed price, a target price or a price per m2 or per hour?

The painting quotes may contain various price calculations:

  • Fixed price
  • Directive price
  • Price per m2
  • Price per hour

Do you want to avoid surprises afterwards? Then ask if the painter wants to charge a fixed price. In this case, the total price is fixed, so you won’t suddenly pay more afterwards than you might have expected.

If you choose a target price, price per hour or price per square metre, the price may end up being higher or lower than you expected. In these cases you are entitled to an itemised bill setting out all costs.

Does your painting quote show a price per hour, but would you like a fixed price? Then you can always discuss this with the painter.

5. Is the VAT rate on painting 21% or 9%?

The reduced VAT rate on painting applies if you have a house that is older than 2 years. To be precise, the reduced VAT rate of 9% instead of 21% is valid on:

  • preparing painting work;
  • carrying out interior and exterior painting work;
  • labour and materials used.

On our page VAT painting you can read all about this topic.

6. What is a normal percentage to pay in advance for a painting project?

A painter can ask for a down payment to order materials in advance, for example, such as the paint. There is no set percentage to be paid in advance, but keep a maximum of 50% yourself. That way, you always have a stick. Ask the painter to send you their general conditions. These will state the percentage for the down payment.

7. How long do I have a guarantee on the paintwork?

For interior painting there is generally a guarantee period of around 4 years and for exterior painting it is on average 2 years. What is or is not covered by the guarantee varies from one painting company to another. Therefore, always ask the painter to send you the warranty terms.

8. Which quality marks and certificates can a painter possess?

Marks and certificates say something about the quality of the service to be provided. However, when a painter does not possess hallmarks or certificates, it does not immediately mean that the quality is not as good. The only difference is that you don’t have the assurance. Well-known quality marks you can compare painters by are:

  • OnderhoudNL Garantie: Painters with OnderhoudNL warranty have the required diplomas and work according to general terms and conditions drawn up by Vereniging Eigen Huis and the Consumentenbond. More than 1,700 painting companies in the Netherlands have this quality mark.
  • De Betere Schilder: Painters with the De Betere Schilder quality mark are regularly checked for quality and must provide clear quotations. More than 500 painting companies in the Netherlands have this quality mark.
  • Quality mark for a professional painter: If the painter has the quality mark for a professional painter, you can expect clear general terms and conditions and clear offers. More than 100 painting companies in the Netherlands have this quality mark.

9. Is a discount possible?

By comparing quotations, you can make substantial savings on your painting project. There are many painting companies in the Netherlands and not every company charges the same price for the same project.

Comparing quotations gives you an insight into these price differences and strengthens your negotiating position.

Cash discount for multiple projects
In addition, a painter can give you a discount if you have several painting projects done at once: this is also called a volume discount. If you only have one painting project yourself, ask your neighbours if their house happens to be in need of a paint job too.

Hire a winter painter
Is your painting project not so seasonal? Then consider hiring a winter painter. In the months of November to March, painters are a lot quieter, while, as long as it is not freezing, they can paint just fine outside. To still have enough work, some painting companies offer a discount on the painting work during that period.

Take the painter’s preparations off your hands
Ask the painter what you can do in advance to ensure that the painter can start work immediately, and thus reduce costs. For example, you can tidy up the room completely and tape off the floor, walls and sockets. In consultation with the painter, it may even be possible to take some preliminary work off his or her hands.
