How do you paint window frames?
Every seven years it is wise to give wooden window frames a new coat of paint. Since exterior window frames have to endure a lot of weather conditions, you could even paint them a little more often. How does window frame painting work?
Preparation
Before you start painting, make sure you are well prepared. First of all, check the current state of the window frames. Do you find any wood rot anywhere? Then remove it with a chisel until you see healthy wood again. Fill the holes with wood rot filler. Note that wood rot filler hardens quickly. So work quickly, or in small bits at a time.
Prepaint the frames and sponge with clean water. Remove loose paint leaves with a paint scraper, sand uneven areas and smooth them with putty. Lightly sand again and clean and dust the window frames.
Ground paint
Time to paint the window frames. First of all, tape the glass and surrounding areas well. First apply a layer of primer if the window frames are still bare or on the areas that have just been repaired to ensure better adhesion of the paint. This will make it easier to cover the lighter paint later. Lightly sand the frames as soon as the primer is dry.
Kit and paint
Make sure the frames are dust-free and seal any seams and cracks. After the sealant has dried, you can start painting. Use a brush for the corners and edges and paint in long strips. Finish with a paint roller from top to bottom to get the paint spread evenly over the frames.
Let this layer dry thoroughly. Then lightly sand the frames again before applying the second coat. Remove the tape while the paint is still wet for the tightest result.
Price structure of window frame painting
What choices affect the price of window frame painting?
The choices you make around your painting project determine the final total cost. We have listed some of these choices.
Choice 1: Painter
The price for hiring a painter to paint your window frames is on average between £35 and £50 per hour. The outside of the window frames will be painted partly using a ladder, or, in the case of window frames on higher floors, or scaffolding. Not every painter includes the cost of renting scaffolding in their prices. So check the quote carefully and ask the specialist about it to avoid unexpected costs.
Choice 2: Paint
Wooden window frames need properly applied painting to protect them from moisture and changing weather conditions. Painted window frames last longer for this reason. Aluminium and plastic window frames do not require painting. If you do decide to paint window frames made of these materials, always use primer first. This ensures that the paint adheres well to the material. Below are common prices for types of paint that can be used when painting window frames.
Paint type | Price per litre incl. vat | Number of m2 per litre | Exceptions |
---|---|---|---|
Ground paint / primer / primer | £ 20 – £ 70 | 8 – 12 | Undercoat |
Stain and varnish | £ 25 – £ 60 | 10 – 16 | Protection coat |
Covering paint | £ 30 – £ 80 | 3 – 16 * | Interior and exterior paint |
* The number of m2 varies because you can paint less m2 with exterior paint than with interior paint.
Choice 3: Combine painting
Many people choose to combine painting, which sometimes gives you a discount on the total cost because you provide the painter with more work in one location. You also save on call-out costs because the painter is already there. Below are average prices for the four most frequently painted surfaces in and around the house.
Surface | Average costs incl. VAT | Details |
---|---|---|
Staircase painting | £ 600 – £ 800 | 1 staircase sanding, cleaning and painting |
Dormer painting | £ 400 – £ 1.500 | From only side panel and side beam to complete dormer |
Doors painting | £ 300 – £ 2,000 | 2 to 20 doors incl. door frames |
Paint ceiling | £ 500 – £ 1.500 | From 30 m2 to 100 m2 |
For exterior painting of a house, painters often charge a total price. The average total prices for various types of house are shown below.
Type of house | Average costs incl. VAT |
---|---|
Appartment | From £1,000 |
Tween house | From £1.500 |
