‘When to paint’, this could mean two things. Either you are curious about how to recognise whether your paintwork is due for a new coat of paint. Or you are curious about what type of weather you can or cannot paint with. This article answers both questions. In addition, read more about the average costs to have your annoying paintwork done by a good painter so you have time for fun things and handy (saving) tips.
When to paint: the signs
After some time, your paintwork is due for a new lick of paint, but how do you know when this is? Exterior paintwork lasts an average of five years, after which it is due for renewal. For interior painting, the average is 7 years.
Look at the signs that indicate that your paintwork needs renewing:
- There are cracks and blisters developing in the paintwork.
- The paintwork is discoloured and worn out.
- The paint is powdering.

Test your paintwork
In addition to the signals that tell you when you need to paint, there are also tests you can perform. That way, you will know when to call in your house painter. Read more about the two ways to test your paintwork below.
Test 1: Adhesion test
You perform the adhesion test by sticking a piece of tape to your paintwork and then pulling it loose. If the paint sticks to the tape, this is an indication that you need to renew your painting.
Test 2: Powder test
Wipe a damp cloth over your painting with the powder test. If powdered paint comes off on your cloth, you know it’s time to call in a painter.
When to paint inside?
An inside painter is available all year round to touch up your painting inside. It is particularly important that the room is well ventilated and that the temperature is constant. Then the paint will dry quickly and evenly. There are a number of situations when indoor painting is not possible:
- When the outside temperature is above 30 degrees Celsius.
Indoor painting in warm weather above this temperature affects the final result and is better postponed by the painter. This is because bubbles can form in the paintwork, preventing your wall saucing or spraying from achieving an optimal result.
- When woodwork is damp
Whether wood rot is already present or not, damp woodwork cannot be painted. If you do, the paint layer will quickly peel off due to the moisture in the wood. It is therefore important that woodwork dries well first, before the painter starts working on it
When do you renew your paintwork indoors?
As you have read earlier, paintwork inside your house lasts an average of 7 years. This is an average and therefore does not apply to all the paintwork in your house. See below for a handy overview of how many years the paintwork will last.
Painting object | After how many years is it due for renewal? |
---|---|
Frames | 5 to 7 years |
Walls | 5 to 10 years |
Doors | 6 to 8 years |
Bathroom | 8 to 10 years |
Kitchen | 5 to 10 years |
Stairs | 5 to 10 years |
When do you paint outside?
Your exterior paint job gets quite a beating with all the different weather conditions. But when do you paint the outside of your house? The best period to have it done is between April and October. During this period, the temperature is between 10 and 25 degrees Celsius, the best temperature to paint in. The brightness of the sun and humidity affect the drying time of your painting. When is it not possible to paint your house from outside? Read about the different situations below.
- When the wood is damp
As with painting the inside of your home, it is important that you have wood painted only when it is thoroughly dry. Damp wood will cause your paintwork to peel quickly. If any wood rot is already present in the wood, the painter should treat it first.
- When the temperature is above 25 degrees Celsius
When you start painting at a temperature above 25 degrees Celsius, it is possible that blisters will appear in the paintwork. This is obviously not the sleek paintwork you want, which is why it is better not to get your exterior painting done at these temperatures.
- When it freezes
When it freezes outside, your painter will not get to work. The colder it is, the slower the paint dries. There is special paint for sale for winter, this paint dries faster at low temperatures than regular paint. However, this so-called winter paint cannot withstand temperatures below freezing.
- When the sentence is full on your house
The house painter paints behind the sun, so never in full sun. If the painter does work in full sunlight, the paintwork may develop blisters and cracks and you will not get the optimum result.
When do you renew your exterior paintwork?
The paintwork on the outside of your house lasts on average 5 years before you have to renew it. This is considerably shorter than the lifespan of interior painting. The shorter lifespan is of course due to the fact that exterior paintwork has to deal with a variety of weather conditions. See below for an overview of the number of years the various paint jobs last.
Painting object | After how many years does it need to be renewed? |
---|---|
Frames | 3 to 5 years |
Gable | 5 to 15 years |
Dormer window | 3 to 5 years |
Prices for painting
When your paintwork is due for renewal, it’s nice to have an indication of the cost. Painting costs depend on a number of factors. Consider, for example, the painting cost, the size of your project and the degree of difficulty. Painting your façade will obviously create higher costs than having your interior wall painted. To give you a better idea of the expected total cost, you will find a handy price overview below.

Call in a winter painter
When you are planning to have your exterior paintwork renewed, you probably think that this is not possible in winter. Painting outside in winter used not to be possible because the materials could not withstand cold and rain. Nowadays, getting your house repainted in winter is no longer a problem. In fact, in winter you can have your house painted by a winter painter at a reduced rate. This discount goes up to 30%, ideal if you don’t want to spend too much money on your painting job. You get the winter painter discount because there is less work for painters in winter.
Go for a maintenance contract
Want to stop worrying about when to paint? The solution to this is to get a maintenance contract from a painting company. Under this contract, your painting will be periodically checked and maintained by an experienced painter. With a painter maintenance contract you pay a fixed amount per month, the amount of which depends on the content of the contract and its duration. This way, you don’t have to think about it anymore and you know for sure that your paintwork is always in good condition.

- Check your paintwork twice a year
By checking your paintwork in spring and autumn for any damage and repairing it, you will prevent your paintwork from further deterioration. This is also recommended by the Vereniging Eigen Huis. Pay particular attention here to transitions between horizontal and vertical paintwork and undersides of woodwork.
- Refinish paintwork regularly
In addition to checking, it is also important that you update your paintwork regularly. By doing this regularly, you avoid bigger painting projects. For example, repair wood rot in your window frames and touch up seams.
- Prevent sharp corners
On sharp corners, only a thin layer of paint is applied, making these areas extra vulnerable to damage. By having sharp corners sanded round, you reduce the chances of damage.
