What choices determine the price of garden paving?

If you are going to have your garden paved, the price will be determined by the choices below, among others.

Choice 1: Tiles or other material?

If you find tiles too expensive for paving your garden, you can choose other materials.

  • Gravel: Gravel is the cheapest alternative to tiles. Gravel are small round pebbles made by nature and deposited by rivers. Gravel is available in different colours and costs on average £10 per m2.
  • Split: Split is very similar to gravel. Where gravel is made by nature, split is forced into its shape. Split is broken and sieved by machines. As a result, split has fractures and sharper edges than gravel. Split costs on average £12 per m2.

Choice 2: Type of tile

There are different types of tiles for paving your garden. They are shown in the table below:

The type of tile Price per m2 Characteristics
Coupling stones £15 – £25 Be tumbled so that sharp edges chip off. This gives them a nostalgic and natural look.
Concrete paving £ 15 – £ 35 Very sturdy tiles that last a long time.Available in different shapes, sizes and colours.
Flagstones £ 25 – £ 40 Flat natural stones in the form of a slab or tile. Vary in shape, size, thickness and texture.
Flagstones £ 30 – £ 45 Flagstones are bricks with a fixed size of 214 x 102 x 55 mm. Are available in different colours.
Wood £ 20 – £ 65 Wood tiles require little maintenance and they cope well with temperature differences.
Natural stone £ 30 – £ 65 Natural stones have a natural and luxurious look and feel and they all have different colours and textures.

Choice 3: Hire a paving contractor

A paving contractor ensures that tiles are laid neatly and firmly. If you have your paving laid by a skilled paver, you can be sure that the quality will be good. Besides, hiring a paver will save you a lot of time and hard work.

The cost of a paver starts at £10 to £20 per m2. Sometimes the cost is calculated by the hour. This happens, for example, when a complicated pattern has to be laid, because laying a special pattern takes more time than a simple pattern. The cost of a paver per hour is between £30 and £60.

Choice 4: Additional options
