You knock open your garden door and the first thing you put your foot on is your patio. Of course, that should then look neat and tidy. Do you want to build a nice terrace, but have no idea how much it will cost? Then read on.
What will it cost to lay a terrace?
On average, having a terrace laid will cost £1,000. Allow for a price of at least £70 per m2 for laying your patio, including the materials and labour costs of a paver.
The biggest influence on the price is which type of garden tile you choose and, of course, the size of the terrace. In the table below, see the average prices for each part of laying the patio.
Streacher | Price, incl. VAT |
---|---|
Per m² | £ 20 – £ 40 |

Constructing a cheap terrace
The cheapest option is to go for clinkers or concrete bricks and an easy laying pattern, such as tiles that are placed alternately. You will pay an average of £800 for 10 m² for this. All amounts include tiles and having them laid by a paving contractor.
Average terrace
In most cases, baked bricks are used. These are stronger and wear out less quickly than concrete bricks. A 10 m² terrace with baked bricks costs on average £1,000.
Luxury terrace installation
For a luxury terrace, both baked bricks and an installation pattern are used. An intricate pattern takes more time to lay, which is why a paver charges an hourly rate in most cases. The cost of laying a luxury patio costs an average of £1,300 for the tiles and the paver.
Price breakdown patio laying
What choices determine the price of laying a patio?
You can make laying your patio as expensive as you want. You will be faced with the following choices, all of which affect the total price.
Choice 1: Type of tiles
To make it a beautiful terrace, you have the choice of many types of tiles. Baked tiles in particular are often used. See the price overview below to get an idea of the cost per type of tile, so that you know which tiles fit within your budget.
Baked tiles | Price per m², incl. VAT | Characteristics |
---|---|---|
Baked tiles | £15 – £35 | Sturdy tiles, which make the tiles long-lasting. Tiles start to discolour after a few years. Available in all sizes, shapes and various colours. |
Natural stone tiles | £ 40 – £ 70 | Think especially of large, luxurious and durable tiles. Often used for a terrace at the house. The stones are very strong and maintenance-free. |
Choice 2: Hire a paver
First ask yourself the question; do you have enough resources and knowledge to build a terrace yourself? Most people outsource laying a patio to a paver to avoid back and knee pain, but also for the best quality to avoid subsidence, discoloured tiles and water not draining away. A paver will charge at least £20 to £40 per m². Would you like a special layout, a real eye-catcher in your garden? Then the price is often per hour (average £ 30 – £ 60), because laying a terrace with ornamental paving, a special laying pattern, takes more time.
Choice 3: Extra options
If the tiles are laid on your terrace, you will obviously want them to remain taut and firm for as long as possible since they will be used a lot. These extra options will help you do just that:
Product | Price | Advantage |
---|---|---|
Insert bands | £ 5 – £ 10 per metre | The paving remains extra firmly in place. |
Sierke | £ 7 – £ 35 per m² | Provides an extra nice look and is good for drainage. |
Dividing bands | £ 10 – £ 30 per metre | For level differences in your garden or beds. |
