Control woodworm

What is woodworm?

The name woodworm has become an umbrella term for all types of insects that live in wood. When we talk about woodworm, we are talking about the larvae of woodworm beetles. The woodworm beetle lays eggs in the wood, after which the beetle larvae attack the wood, making holes in it. They prefer soft and dry wood. Areas such as furniture, floors and roof structures are therefore often targeted.

The larvae are small worms and are cream in colour. They look a bit like maggots. In fact, they have a ridged body, their head is black and they grow to be about 11 millimetres long.

Woodworm can easily be confused with longhorn beetle. Both are wood-boring insects, but there are also some important differences. Namely, woodworm lives just below the surface of the wood, while longhorn beetle attacks the wood to the core. Also, the openings are smaller and rounder than those of longhorn beetle. Let the professional determine which type of insect is involved so that the right control technique can be applied.

Price examples of woodworm control

Woodworm beetles lay an average of 100 eggs per year in the seams and cracks of wood, in groups of 3 to 4. This leads to many offspring per year. The spread therefore occurs at lightning speed. Check out the price examples below to get a better idea of these pest control costs.

Costliest option

The larvae like to nest in furniture, such as a large wooden cupboard. Have you currently only discovered them in the furniture in your home? Then you have caught it in time and it is easy to control by a specialist. Control costs are around £80, which is the cheapest variant of woodworm control.

Most common

The larvae spread unnoticed in the wooden beams in the attic. After several years, they have nested in all the wooden beams. This is the most common situation where the control costs are around £300.

Extensive situation

If you do not control them professionally on an entire floor, the pests will move on to other floors. This leads to an infestation throughout your home. In this extended situation, you will pay an average of £600 in control costs.

Tips to prevent woodworm

Have you discovered some holes with larvae? If so, follow the tips below to prevent woodworm.

Tips The action
1. Paint, varnish, or oil the wood By coating the wood, you protect the material from woodworm. This is because it likes to move into untreated, damp wood.
2. Make sure there is good ventilation A good ventilation in the house prevents damp and mouldy wood, which the woodworm loves.

What remedies can you use to fight woodworm?

View the chart below for the different pesticides.

Type of woodworm pesticide The action
1. Poison The first method used by a specialist is the spread of poison, a very effective means by which he fights woodworm.
2. Cold Are there woodworms in smaller objects? Put the objects in a plastic bag. Place these in the freezer for 2 weeks so that the woodworms die.
3. Gas Is an area with woodworms difficult to reach? Then the specialist spreads gas, causing the woodworms to die. This form of control is complex and labour-intensive.
