Rustic Putz:
Do you want a decorative plaster on your wall that has a fairly coarse texture? An area of, say, 30 m2 costs on average between £360 and £690. For an area of 30 m2 , count on being a bit more at the top end of this price, as it is a small area.

Spachtelputz:
The most popular decorative plaster at the moment is spachtelputz. If you have an area of around 80 m2, you will pay between £960 and £1,840 on average. 80 m2 is a fairly large area so you usually pay a lower price per m2.

Granol:
Granol is the coarsest type of decorative plaster, characterised by the grooves in the wall. If you have a large area of around 150 m2, you will pay between £1,800 and £3,450 on average, where you can calculate that you are more at the lower end of the price, as it is a large area.

What choices determine the decorative plaster price?

The following choices affect how high the decorative plaster price will be in your situation.

Choice 1: What kind of decorative plaster do you want?

There are different types of decorative plaster to choose from, all with a different look. In terms of price, there is no difference between these 3 decorative plasters, it is a matter of taste.

Rustic putz: Also called baroque plaster, it is a plastic-based decorative plaster. Rustic putz has a grain thickness of 1.5 mm or 1.8 mm. Rustic putz is in between spachtelputz and granol because it has small grooves in addition to a grain structure. Because rustic putz has a small grain, it gives a calm and fine structure to the wall, which is why rustic putz is often used in modern homes.

Spachtelputz: Spachtelputz is plastic-based just like rustic putz, but has a regular grain structure so it still looks calm despite the large grains. You can choose the grain size yourself; the grains range from 1 mm to 2.5 mm. The larger the grain is, the coarser the structure becomes. Spachtelputz is often used in new-build homes because it lasts for years and fits well with a modern house.

Granol: In the 1970s and 1980s, granol was very popular. Granol has the coarsest texture of the different forms of decorative plaster and has grooves ranging from 3 mm to 4 mm. A plasterer can apply the granol in 2 ways:

  • The “fan” is a common way, in which the granol is applied to the wall in a twisting manner.
  • The “tree bark” is a way in which the granol is applied vertically to the wall making it look like tree bark.

Choice 2: Decorative plaster on a small or large surface ?

The size of the surface determines the price per m2. If a plasterer plasters a large surface, the price per m2 will be lower than if he plasters a small surface. A plasterer works more efficiently if he can plaster a larger area in one go. The price per m2 is also higher if the plasterer has to plaster many corners or hard-to-reach areas.

Choice 3: Get a specialist to apply decorative plaster

A finished wall is the foundation of your house, so it is important that it is done properly. A plasterer will use his techniques and quality materials to ensure that the plaster comes out perfectly on your walls or ceilings. You can save on the decorative plaster price by doing the plastering yourself, but without experience it is a difficult project. If you have a tricky or very small project, the plasterer may calculate the price per hour instead of per m2. A plasterer costs on average between £20 and £60 per hour. The minimum amount is based on a less experienced plasterer who uses cheaper materials and the maximum is based on a more experienced plasterer who uses better materials.

Choice 4: Additional options for decorative plastering

Finally, there are a number of additional options that may apply to your decorative plastering project.

Job Average price per m2 incl. materials, labour costs and VAT When?
Sanding £ 15 – £ 25 If you want a nice shadow effect on your ceiling, for example, then choose sanding. The plasterer works with a sanding sponge with which he applies a sandy surface on the ceiling in rotating movements.
£ 15 – £ 30 If you have walls or ceilings that are too rough, have a layer of plaster mortar applied as a base for other forms of plastering. A layer of rendering is between 5 and 7 mm thick.
