What does the price structure of plastering look like?

The cost of having plastering applied is structured as follows:

What choices determine the plastering costs?

How high the cost of your ideal plastering depends on the choices below:

Choice 1: What kind of plastering do you want to have applied?

There are 3 different types of plastering, see where they differ from each other:

Spacking: The most economical type of plastering is spacking. This is because spackling is sprayed onto the wall by machine. Prices range from £5 to £11 per m2. The price difference is determined by what colour you want the spray paint to be applied. White is the basic colour, but you can also choose another colour. If you choose colour, it is advisable to have it done immediately during the spraying, so the wall does not have to be painted afterwards and the wall is coloured through and through, making any damage less obvious. Plasterers charge a colour supplement of £2 per m2 . White plastering costs on average between £5 and £9 per m2 , and another colour between £7 and £11 per m2 . Wallpaper-ready plaster is cheaper than sauce-ready plaster because sauce-ready plaster takes more effort and time for the plasterer. Paint-ready plaster is a finish in which the plaster has been made completely smooth and even, so that it is suitable for painting or painting. Wallpaper-ready plaster is a type of plaster where the wall is plastered coarser, so that the wall is suitable for wallpapering or decorative plaster over it. A wallpaper-ready plastered wall is not suitable for painting because the wall is too rough, so the paint does not adhere well.

Emire plaster: Ornamental plaster is currently a very popular method of plastering because it gives a special texture to your wall. Decorative plaster is plastic-based plastering that makes it impact-resistant and weatherproof, making it suitable for both indoors and outdoors. There are different types of decorative plaster. The most popular decorative plaster at the moment is spachtelputz, a decorative plaster with a grain structure of 1 mm to 2.5 mm. You decide whether a fine or coarse structure is created. Another form of decorative plaster is rustic putz, also known as baroque plaster. Rustic putz has a grain thickness of 1.5 mm or 1.8 mm and shows small grooves. Rustic putz therefore lies between spachtelputz and granol. Granol is the coarsest decorative plaster, as it has deep grooves ranging from 3 mm to 4 mm.

Choice 2: Outsource to plasterer or do it yourself?

If you want to save money on plastering and are thinking of doing it yourself, it is important to consider the following 3 things:

  1. Plasteringing is not as easy as it looks and for good plastering you need experience and quality materials. When you hire a plasterer, you can be sure that he has those quality materials and the right technique.
  2. If you have no experience, plastering is a time-consuming project. Because you work less quickly and efficiently without experience, the plaster dries too quickly, leaving the wall more uneven than when a plasterer plasters the wall at a fast pace.
  3. What you should also take into account is that plastering is physically demanding work.

If you want to be sure of getting quality, something that is very crucial for the walls of, say, your living room that you look at every day, then hire a plasterer.

Choice 3: What needs to be plastered?

The price is also determined by what you want to have plastered. For example, plastering a ceiling is more expensive than plastering a wall because a ceiling is harder to reach. If a plasterer has to plaster difficult areas, such as ceilings or difficult corners, the price per m2 goes up for those areas. Count on the highest price in the price range of the cost overview at the top of the page. Suppose you have your ceiling plastered ready to be painted, then you can assume that you are closer to £23 per m2 than to £9 m2.

Choice 4: Additional options

Finally, there are a number of additional options that may apply to your plastering project.

Service Average price, incl. VAT When?
Sanding £ 15 – £ 25 per m2 If you want a nice shadow effect on your ceiling, for example, choose sanding. The plasterer works with a sanding sponge with which he applies a sandy surface to the ceiling in rotating movements.
£ 15 – £ 30 per m2 If you have walls or ceilings that are too rough, have a layer of plaster mortar applied as a base for other forms of plasterwork. A layer of rendering is between 5 and 7 mm thick.
Starting rate £ 290 – £ 320
