Learn more about the prices of different clogs in the following 3 situations:

Costliest unclogging: One of the easiest clogs to solve is the shower drain clog. The plumber needs little material for this and is quick to finish it. Is the cost of fixing the shower drain clog calculated based on your plumber’s labour? If so, the price is often between £25 and £50.

Average unclogging: The most common fee for a plumber to fix a clog is a flat rate. For standard unclogs such as fixing clogged kitchen, toilet or bathroom drains, the cost is around £90.

Expensive unclogging: A less common, and therefore more expensive, clogging is that of the sewer. Sewer unblocking is mainly done by high-pressure cleaning. Because the plumber is more difficult to get to the cause of the blockage and therefore needs other equipment, such as a pressure washer, the price is higher. The average price for unclogging the sewer is £150.

What choices determine the cost of clog fix?

Based on the choices below, your plumber will determine the cost of fixing a clog in your home:

Choice 1: The price based on a fixed rate or labour

A fixed rate is charged for most standard plumbing work. For example, the price for fixing a clog is around £90 on average, excluding an average £35 call-out fee. If a plumber is self-employed, he sets his own hourly rate and the cost of clearing a blockage is often calculated using labour costs. In that case, assume an average of £ 40 to £ 60 per hour. Clearing a clog often takes no more than half an hour to an hour. Remember that this is the cost of labour and that call-out charges of an average of £ 35 are often added.

Choice 2: The difficulty of the blockage

The difficulty of the blockage plays a major role in determining the price; the more difficult it is, the longer it will take the plumber to fix it. If the plumber sets his price based on hourly wages, the price will logically be higher. Even when a fixed rate is used, the price may be higher for a clog that is difficult to solve. Often, the fixed rate applies to a clog that is solved within the hour, for example. If your plumber is working longer, he will charge an extra amount for every 15 or 30 minutes he is still working. The plumber’s extra time costs an average of £30 to £40 per half hour.

Choice 3: Extra inspection by the plumber

The plumber may choose to carry out an extra inspection to prevent future problems, for example. Discuss with the plumber which inspections will be carried out. Have it included on your plumber quote so you can decide afterwards whether you want this or not.

Extra ìnspection From price, incl. labour, materials and VAT Explanation
Leak detection £ 175 To prevent leaks or detect the cause of leaks, the plumber checks sensitive spots in the house.
Camera inspection £ 195 The plumber uses a camera to check whether the sewer is still in good condition and/or to find where sewers and down pipes are leaking.
