A bathroom leak or leaking heating pipes is something you want fixed as soon as possible to avoid bigger damage. Call in a plumber to find and fix the leak. You can find average prices for various leakages on Renoca.
What does a leakage detection cost?
Get your leak fixed as soon as possible to prevent greater damage. If the leakage is present for longer, a larger area of your walls will become brittle which means higher costs. The leakage can also cause invisible damage, such as affecting the structure of your home. See the price overview below for the average plumber costs for leaks.
Type of leak | Cost per project, incl. materials and VAT, excl. call-out charges | Explanation |
---|---|---|
Detect and fix heating pipe leaks | £75 | Based on average labour for 1 hour’s labour. |

View the prices of detecting and fixing a leak in 3 different situations.
Small leak: A small common leak, is a leak on the heating system. This leakage can have several causes. Is it a problem with the pressure in the boiler? Then your installation engineer will fix it for you. Is the problem in the heating system itself or in the pipes? For that, you call in a plumber. Locating and repairing this leak is often done within an hour and therefore costs on average £ 110, including call-out charges.
Average leak: A plumbing leak is very common. In the bathroom, toilet or kitchen, the plumber usually performs a moisture measurement to measure the percentage of moisture in a particular place. If the readings are abnormal, the leak is soon found. Detection and repair of a leak in the bathroom, for example, is often done within 2 hours and therefore costs an average of £185, including call-out charges.
Great leakage work: Not every leak is detected and repaired harmlessly. An example is a leak under a shower tray, requiring its removal and replacement. This takes the plumber an average of 4 hours, due to the extra work involved. The cost of this repair averages £335, including call-out charges. The cost of a new shower tray is not included and ranges
between £75 and £400.
How does the price structure of fixing a leak look like?
What choices determine the cost of detecting and fixing a leak?
Because no leak is the same, costs vary. The cost of detecting and fixing a leak is therefore mainly based on a plumber’s labour. Make the choices below to get a price indication for fixing the leak.
Choice 1: A small or a large leak
The longer the leak remains untreated, the greater the damage will be and the longer it will take the plumber to fix it. Are you in a hurry? Then a leak can often be repaired within 1 or 2 hours. So for a small leak, you will often not spend more than £ 150. For complicated and large leaks, the price can easily double.
Choice 2: The method used by the plumber
The detection of leaks is done using moisture measurement, a smoke test, ultrasonic detection or camera detection. In most cases, a moisture measurement is done. See the overview below to find out what the different methods involve.
Method | Explanation |
---|---|
M Moisture measurement | A moisture meter is used to measure the presence of moisture in materials such as wood, stone and plaster. A high value helps find the leak. |
Smoke test | Used to find leaks in roofing materials. Smoke is blown along the roof and where it comes out, the leak can be found. |
Ultrasonic detection | A transmitter is placed inside the house and tested from outside with the ultrasonic receiver. Where the signal is stronger (more sound) the leak is located. |
Camera detection | The plumber uses a camera to check if the sewer is still in good condition and/or to find where sewers and down pipes are leaking. |
Choice 3: The time to hire a plumber
Plumbers are employed by plumbing companies or work as self-employed workers. In the Netherlands, there are many plumbers working as ZZP’er, which is advantageous because they are often available in the evenings or very early in the morning. Your plumber does charge an increased hourly rate for different times. The average hourly wage of a plumber is £50 when engaged between 8am and 6pm. Do you need a plumber immediately, outside these times? Then the average hourly wage is £75.
Choice 4: Extra options
Choose extra options to get your home back in perfect condition. If you are unsure about additional options, have them included in the plumber quote so that you can then make your choice.

---|---|---|
Wall painting | £35 – £40 | Repair the visible water damage on your walls by a professional painter. |
Wall wallpapering | £35 – £40 | Replace wallpaper after water damage to restore the wall to perfect condition. |
Replace defective object | £ 60 – £ 90 | Replace, for example, a tap or shower tray after the leak has been repaired. |
