Costs skylight: What choices affect the price?
There are a number of choices that determine skylight costs. Are you curious which choices make a skylight cheap or expensive? Check it out in the overview below.
Choice 1: Type of material
The type of material affects the skylight cost. Most common in the Netherlands are wooden and plastic skylights, but a skylight made of steel or aluminium is also possible. See below the types of materials, with pros and cons and the average price.
Type of material | Advantages | Disadvantages | Average price including VAT and installation |
---|---|---|---|
Wood skylight | – Classic look – Relatively cheap – Good insulation value |
– Needs more maintenance – More burglar-prone |
£820 – £1.050 |
Plastic skylight | – Modern look – Available in multiple colours – Long-lasting – Low maintenance |
– More expensive choice | £ 850 – £ 1.110 |
Steel skylight | – Authentic – Lasts a long time – Burglar-proof |
– Poor insulation value – More expensive choice |
£ 900 – £ 1.150 |
Aluminium skylight | – Modern look – Available in several colours – Good insulation – Burglar-proof |
– Most expensive choice – Difficult to repair |
£ 1.000 – £ 1,260 |
Choice 2: Skylight type
There are different types of skylights available for both flat and pitched roofs. The cost of roof windows varies by type. See the overview below for prices per type of roof window.
Tuimel window
In the Netherlands, a tuimel window is the most common. This type of skylight moves 180 degrees around its own axis, allowing you to open it far. This also makes it easy to clean. New types of tuimel windows also have a ventilation grille, giving you enough ventilation even on rainy days. Check the average skylight costs here.
Type of skylight | Average cost of skylight including installation and VAT |
---|---|
Tumbler window | £ 820 – £ 1.000 |
Falling window
A falling window has hinges at the top of the frame, so this type of window opens higher. This makes your room look more spacious and lighter. Fall windows open outwards as well as inwards and, like a pivot window, have a ventilation grille. Because the window opens high, it is more difficult to clean this skylight properly. Valley window | £870 – £1,050 |
Light dome
On flat roofs you usually install a skylight. This type of skylight is possible with both curved and flat glass. There are also skylights made of plexiglass. This material is the cheapest, but discolours slightly after a few years. A glass skylight, on the other hand, never discolours. A skylight can be opened either manually or electrically. Especially for a skylight that is difficult to reach, an electric skylight is the best choice. However, the skylight costs are higher. View the skylight costs of a skylight here.
Type of skylight | Average skylight costs including installation and VAT |
---|---|
Light dome | £ 850 – £ 1.110 |
Choice 3: Finishing
When the specialist installs your skylight, he still has to finish the inside of your roof. The interior finishing is sometimes not included in the price. In the overview below, take a look at the average interior finishes that affect the skylight cost.
Roof window depth | Average interior finishing costs roof window (including installation and VAT) |
---|---|
30 cm | £ 180 – £ 220 |
40 cm | £ 215 – £ 245 |
50 cm | £ 300 – £ 325 |
Choice 4: Additional options
There are a number of additional choices that affect the skylight cost. Check out some of the extra choices below to give you a better idea of the final price.
Darkening
If you choose a skylight, good blackout is a real plus. Curtains are tricky to hang, but there are plenty of alternatives for your skylight. With a skylight blind, you can darken your home in no time. This type of blind is placed between the internal window frames, blocking all light. Check the average skylight cost for a roller blind here.
Type of blackout | Average skylight blind cost including installation and VAT |
---|---|
Roof window blind | £ 60 – £ 220 |
Electric skylight
With an electric skylight, you have the luxury of remotely opening or closing your skylight. It is also possible to use a timer to have your skylight or blinds open at a specific time, when you wake up, for example. The costs for an electric skylight are a bit higher than for a skylight that you open manually, though.
Extra choice | Average cost of skylight including installation and VAT |
---|---|
Electric skylight | £ 950 – £ 1.400 |
Electric roller blind | £ 170 – £ 250 |
