Modern new staircase

Why some models are more expensive than others? You can find out in the examples below.

Lowest price:
You are cheapest when you want a straight open staircase. This is because it requires less material and time to make and install than closed stairs or stairs with bends in them. The cost of a new staircase for a standard model spruce open staircase is on average £ 2,000.

Average price:
Something more expensive is a staircase with a top or bottom quarter. These stairs are found in most Dutch houses. You pay an average of £ 2,500 for pine open stairs with a top or bottom quarter. The higher price comes from the extra wood needed for the turn at the top or bottom of the staircase and the assembly that takes more time.

Highest price:
Do you opt for a new staircase with double-quarter turn? The height cost depends on this model of staircase. The average closed pine staircase with double-quarter turn costs on average £2,800. The extra material required to make your staircase closed costs on average £200 to £300 more than the cost of an open staircase of the same model.

Price structure of new staircase costs

A new staircase installation involves two types of costs: material (staircase, stair covering and accessories such as anti-slip strips) and labour (the delivery and installation of the new staircase).

What choices determine the cost of a new staircase?

In order to give you a good indication of the cost of installing a new staircase, we have listed several choices you will face below.

Choice 1: The model of the staircase
The model of the staircase is the most important choice you will make in terms of price. In many homes, there is little room for a free choice in the model. If you do have this space, it is important to decide in advance which model of staircase you want. A staircase with a bottom or top quarter or a double quarter takes up a lot more space than a straight staircase. This is therefore one reason why the cost of such a new staircase is higher. This is because a specialist will take longer to install your new staircase because this work is complicated and uses more material.

Choice 2: An open or closed staircase
In addition to the model of the staircase, you decide whether you want an open or closed staircase. Each model of staircase is supplied as an open staircase as standard and is completed with risers if you wish. The risers that make an open staircase into a closed staircasen cost on average £150 to £200 for the entire staircase.

Choice 3: Including or excluding assembly

Often the installation of a new staircase is done within one day. In complex cases, for example when removing the old staircase causes problems, it takes a little longer. The average price for a new staircase is £2,475, of which about £250 is for the delivery and installation of the new staircase.

The installation of a new staircase is not a project that anyone can do just like that. It requires a lot of precision; after all, it is important to be sure you can walk up and down the stairs safely. For this reason, the prices of a new staircase are usually quoted including assembly.

Choice 4: Is the staircase primed or unprimed?
A new staircase is usually delivered unprimed, but in the case of a tailor-made staircase, a painted staircase, clad staircase or a staircase with overlay steps is certainly also an option. Prices for installing a new staircase are always given on the basis of an unfinished staircase. If you would like your new stairs to be finished immediately, this will only be done at your home. The costs for finishing your staircase vary from £400 to £1,500, depending on which type of finishing you choose and the type of staircase you have installed.

Choice 5: Extra options
The last choice you make before having a new staircase installed is which extras you would like to add to your new staircase. Check the table below to see how you can make your new stairs safer or give them a modern look.
