Wondering how the cost of a bespoke staircase is structured? You can find out in the price examples below.
Costliest option:
The cheapest option for a made-to-measure staircase is an open straight staircase, also known as a pitch staircase, made of pine. Because an open staircase does not have any risers fitted, the price is lower than that of a closed staircase. Spruce is the most commonly used wood species in the Netherlands and is therefore often found in a wood staircase. From £1,300, you already have an open-stepped staircase. Including installation, the price is around £1,750.
Most frequently chosen option:
A closed pine staircase with bottom or top quarter is the most frequently chosen option for a made-to-measure staircase. This staircase turns a quarter turn at the top or bottom, making it easy to fit into a corner of your home. From £1,450, you have a closed pine staircase. If you staircase is installed, the average cost is £2,000.
Most elaborate option:
Choosing a closed double-quarter oak staircase means going for the most luxurious option. Oak is a stronger wood and therefore more durable, but also more expensive. Excluding installation, the cost of this custom-made staircase averages £2,750. Including installation costs, such a luxury staircase has an average price tag of £3,200.

What choices determine the cost of a bespoke staircase?
A bespoke staircase is one where you determine the specifications yourself. As the name suggests, a bespoke staircase is customised specifically to your requirements. The choices below affect the final cost of a bespoke staircase.
Choice 1: What material do you choose?
The most commonly chosen material for a staircase is still wood. Specifically spruce, which is also the cheapest option. Of course, several types of wood are possible for your bespoke staircase, the main ones being beech, mahogany or oak. However, materials such as metal, glass or concrete are certainly also possible. Talk to a specialist about which option is most suitable for your home.
In the table below we have listed the average costs of a closed staircase with a lower or upper quarter for different types of wood.
Wood type | Em. price per closed staircase with lower or upper quarter, incl. installation and VAT |
---|---|
Firwood | £ 1,400 |
Beech | £ 2,400 |
Mahogany | £ 2,800 |
Oak | £ 3.200 |
Choice 2: What kind of staircase do you want?
The choice in the model staircase makes a lot of difference to the price of your bespoke staircase. Generally, you choose between a straight pitch staircase or one with twists. Stairs with bottom quarter, top quarter or double quarter are made with more material and are a little more complex, increasing the price. Homes with little space for a staircase can also opt for more compact models, such as a spindle staircase. In the cost overview below, see the difference in price depending on the model.
Model | Price of spruce staircase, incl. installation and VAT |
---|---|
Staircase | £1,500 – £1.700 * |
Spindle stairs | £ 1,700 – £ 2,500 |
Under or top quarter | £ 1,800 – £ 2.200 * |
Double-quarter | £ 2,000 – £ 3,100 * |
* Prices vary for an open or closed staircase. A closed staircase has risers that cost an extra £200 per staircase on average.
Choice 3: Finishing
As soon as you have chosen the material and model of your staircase, the staircase will be made to measure. Before the staircase is actually installed, think about the finish of your bespoke staircase.
