Choices that affect the cost your new bathroom
The tiles are the biggest cost when you get your bathroom tiled. Tile prices vary a lot, making the total cost quite different. Besides the tiles, there are other factors that affect the total price. Read more about them below:
Choice 1: Type of tile
The prices of bathroom tiles range from £ 15 to £ 160 per m². Here you can also distinguish between tiling a bathroom floor and a bathroom wall. Floor tiles cost on average between £15 and £160 and wall tiles between £10 and £70.
Most people opt for ceramic tiles in the bathroom, partly because these tiles are resistant to moisture. Ceramic tiles are produced in a factory by compressing clay and are available in every conceivable size and colour. The overview below shows the costs and options of ceramic tiles:
Ceramic tiles | Price per m² | Exceptions |
---|---|---|
Faience tiles | £ 9 – £ 45 | Wall tile |
Greed tiles | £ 13 – £ 65 | Floor tile, but can also be used on the wall |
Cement tiles | £ 60 – £ 82 | Impregnant coating required and not suitable for installation in the shower itself |
Impregnant costs £ 35 per litre and can be used to impregnate 20 to 35 m², depending on the absorbency of the tiles. Some varieties of natural stone also need to be impregnated, such as limestone and marble. Natural stone, as the name suggests, is created by nature by petrifying magma, clay or lime, for example, through high pressure. Prices for natural stone tiles are as follows:
Natural stone | Price per sq m | Peculiarities |
---|---|---|
Leate | £25 – £160. £ 105 | Suitable for the bathroom |
Marble | £ 50 – £ 130 | Suitable if coated with impregnation |
Please note:
- R-value: This indicates the extent to which the tile is slip-resistant. By choosing an R-value between 9 and 13, you reduce the risk of slipping. In addition, the floor tile should have a B or C rating, which means it has an anti-slip coating.
- PEI value: This value tells you how wear-resistant the tile is. For floor tiles, this value should be 3 or higher. For wall tiles, a PEI value of 1 is already sufficient, as there is no load on the wall.
Choice 2: Tiling the toilet
If you are having your bathroom wall or bathroom floor tiled, you can choose to also have your toilet tiled immediately and, for example, in the same style. For the toilet, the same R and PEI values apply as for the bathroom, see option 1. Below are two examples of total costs for tiling your toilet:
- Good value: If you have your toilet tiled by a tiler with 5 m² of cheap ceramic tiles, this will cost you £300.
- Luxe: If you would like 10 m² of luxury natural stone tiles in your toilet, this will cost you £1,050.
Choice 3: The tiler
In general, the price of the tiler comes out to between £25 and £40 per m² or hour. It is also common for the tiler to set one price for the whole project in advance. Always discuss what is and is not included in the price so that you can be sure you are not paying too much. In addition, you can request a consultation in advance at a one-off cost of £ 50. If you hire this tiler, you get the consultation free of charge. The costs will be deducted from the total amount.
Choice 4: Underfloor heating
When you start tiling the bathroom floor, you can choose to have underfloor heating installed at the same time. Installing underfloor heating in the bathroom increases comfort. How nice is it when you are no longer startled by a cold floor when you get out of the shower? Underfloor heating can be installed either as main or additional heating. A big advantage of main heating is that you no longer need a radiator and therefore create more space in your bathroom. There are two types of underfloor heating:
- Inmilling involves incorporating the underfloor heating pipes into the screed (a cement layer over the supporting floor).
- Crimp nets are installed if the screed is missing. This involves tying the heating pipes to steel nets or studded plates and then applying a screed over them.
Below is an overview of the costs for both types:
Number of m² | Inmilling | Crimp nets | |
---|---|---|---|
Main heating | 10 – 100 | £825 – £2.200 | £ 850 – £ 2,650 |
Auxiliary heating | 15 – 150 | £ 825 – £ 2,200 | £ 850 – £ 2,650 |
Choice 5: Emergency shower
An emergency shower is a mobile shower cabin that is connected to your own water network. If you cannot use your bathroom for a while but still want convenience, an emergency shower is a good solution. Emergency showers can be rented for as little as £200 per 2 weeks, including call-out charges and installation. An example: the hire company has to drive 30 kilometres, connect the shower for you and also disconnect and collect the emergency shower. This will cost you between £200 and £250 for a fortnight. Ask your tiler about the options for hiring an emergency shower.

Tile a floor using tile adhesive and a notched trowel. Start by measuring the floor so you know how many tiles you need. Then you can start fixing tension wires. This way you have a guideline for tiling. Then you can apply tile adhesive for some tiles, start laying the first tile and press it firmly into the adhesive.
